no. ive handwritten and passed 4. no issues.

my pen doesnt crash, bluescreen, exams dont get lost, i have 4 pens so i have redundancy, dont rely on a incompetent 3rd party to tally exams and transfer files etc. if my exams get lost its the bar committees fault and UPS has good tracking.

It took my bar 1/2 by computer and 1/2 written. Yes my laptop froze. It was in the beginning of an essay thankfully. If you do it by laptop, you have to be 100% comfortable with switching to writing. I was the only person I know of that had laptop problems, so its rare, but can happen.

Also if you do it by laptop, I would have a fairly newish one. The bar taking software is very hard on the computer and I know the people that tested the software on their older laptops prior to the exam had problems.

People on this board are extremely paranoid about it, and not without good reason, but you have to carefully consider what your handwriting skills are like now. My long form handwriting is pretty sloppy and I tend to edit a lot even on timed writing, so even with the better documented risks now, I would still consider it a risk worth taking.

Absolutely, use the computer. There's a reason people in society prefer using the computer to handwriting. Almost all those reasons apply to this decision as well.

1. It is faster, so you can take longer to organize your answer in your head.

2. It is clearer. If the examiner can't read your answer then you can't get points. This is never an issue with computer.

3. It is easier to edit. You will be under intense time pressure after cramming obscure legal points into your head in the days leading up to the exam. Do you really want to draw 7 arrows across your essay and hope the examiner gives you points for them? Yes, with handwriting, you can just put all the points at the end, but bar examiners like organization. In fact, barbri will tell you to try to organize your answer in the same fuckin order that the model answer is organized. I know, it's retarded.

4. The disaster scenario that everyone talks about is your computer crashing. Big fuckin deal. Want to know the consequences of this "disaster"? You have to choose the very option (i.e., handwriting) that you currently think isn't so bad! Yes, you lose a couple minutes. The odds are in your favor that the computer won't crash anyway, and if it does, you get to try handwriting. (There are bar-urban-legends that the software will lose someone's essay, but I doubt they're true.)

5. Most bars credit you for correct points and do not discredit you for incorrect points. This means, the exam taker who puts down more number of points has a higher chance of scoring better. Of course, you can't just put anything down, but every law student should know how to put down some educated-sounding bullshit. And, if you've got nothing, just throw in a bunch of factual analysis; you'll get points sometimes.

6. You took class notes and exams on your computer, right? Your mind is already attuned to exam performance on the computer. The bar is a minimal competence test; there's no need to shoot for some spectacular performance. Do what you've been doing; why change it up?

Reason for the ridiculously long post: I just think this is a ridiculously easy decision for anyone who even has to ask, but it still gets asked time and again. If you love handwriting (e.g., you take class notes by hand), then I think it makes perfect sense to handwrite. If you're like the vast majority who use Word, take it on laptop.
