what a stupid blurb. "we found more oil for a while so peak oil is clearly wrong and innovative free market technologies will ensure it never runs out!"

The Oil Drum was a great resource and many of its contributors presciently called for a spike in oil prices back when prices were less than $30 a barrel. Unfortunately, at times its comments section was overrun by hardcore survivalists and apocalyptic types.

I do think that it has served its purpose and is no longer necessary. Ten years ago, the dominant view in the oil industry was that production technology had come so far that any rise in price would be met with an immediate and corresponding increase in supply and as a result, prices would not rise over time. Many in the late 90's even believed that prices would remain in the single digits and that countries like Saudi Arabia were doomed. After years of increasing prices and modest to stagnant worldwide production increases I don't think anyone really believes that anymore.

I never would have thought we'd be in today's position. With China's economic struggles, and downward population trajectory, it's possible the world's economy won't ever demand enough oil to pressure supplies.

cr

Also, there are goddamn oceans of oil in strata that hasn’t even been touched yet.

There’s oil at like 100,000 feet below the surface.
