I had a modded 360 and games like this would always get hyped and great reviews so I'd burn it to DVD and play for 30-40 mins and realize it fucking sucks ass. The only games I played were FIFA, NHL, and COD.
Now every AAA game is this way, and FIFA, NHL, and COD are way worse than they were back then, just total shit.
Even back then Very few single player games were worth a damn imo. They were just far too American. I found a reprieve on Nintendo DS and PSP they had some real gems
Crackdown was fun

Never really touched these. They felt like they were for either late millennials, or maybe 80s-born millennials whose brains developed slowly for whom their ability to play games to completion only manifested in their teens. Also for sull56ivan-esque Trailerfucks who weren't so attached to ps1 and genesis that they never developed curiosity about 2000s games. it just felt like the single player games were an extension of the experience that the Scumbag kid would have in Halo/Gears/COD. Something to play Contemplatively when not in the mood for online murderfests but with a familiar control scheme and of course, first person perspective.
I was going to make a post the other day. when genres become dominant they subsume everything on the platform. Halo was fuckin' popular. Enter Morrowind (fpv) bioshock (fps), mass effect (fps), and more. the dual analog fps control scheme transitioned seamlessly from game to game. particularly useful for Scumbags who struggle with playin Games. Also Genesis has the Jurassic Park game where you play as the fuckin' dinosaur, and it also had Primal Rage as a spiritual exclusive. Hardware has consequences imo.
btw Halo invented he scumfuck dual analog control scheme but nobody gives it credit. Alien Resurrection did actually but nobody cares. It's just weird how Face Buttons have become secondary. Some Eastern games at least use a face button for Sprint or Jump or whatever.

Mass Effect is one of the best RPGs ever made.
Bioshock was solid.
Dead Space was just ok.

These games were 180. “Gameplay” is obsolete unless it’s FromSoft or Zelda. Story is king.
OP seems more of a GAAS slop type of dude.

Games can do more with their stories imo. Lengthier and you can do basically any cgi nbd because the game is cgi
These western game stories and Cutscenes do nothing for me. Like having the male voice in cyberpunk sound like 😏 and the Witcher sounding as Cool as possible, stuff like that adds up and it starts to feel like they just want 14 year olds to think it’s Cool. Which I guess that’s what MGS is. But it’s intellectual iirc.
Witcher 3 is kind of like FF8. “Guys the card game, omg.”
