Garfield merchandise and strips became beloved by NPC office workers, in a proto-reddit "that's so me" way. Haha, he's a grumpy cat who loves to sleep and eat and hates the sociable dog, haha. The other person in his life is a doofus, haha.
Jim Davis, being a genius marketer, realized that he didn't need to actually give Garfield any reasons for mirroring these people's feelings, instead he could directly channel them for even more marketing prowess. Garfield began to hate Mondays not because Garfield is a realized character who cares about days of the week, but because Garfield was a mask for people who had no personality of their own.
