Why are Americans obsessed with being millionaires?

Most of the time, to make those millions they need to exploit other humans or steal from them, and in the end, they just continue to be miserable. But they're the only ones putting in the time to become millionaires.
Europeans work normal hours and make enough to live and live happier.

So, you look at friend A who has more than you (nicer car, nicer house, nicer vacations) and friend B who has less (lives in a more "diverse" area, etc.) and the differences are starker than they would be in Europe where the income disparity between you, friend A and friend B is smoother. It is worshiped to a certain extent and buying things to show off is a huge part of the Amerikkkan experience. But income disparity is not the reason for this. Also, income disparity falls away when you get to a pretty low standard of living. Someone in America who makes $2m per year and spends $1m is probably buying a lot of things and is pretty showy, but their life probably doesn't differe too much from the person who makes $250k and spends $100k on core spending. In fact, the $250k person may be saving/investing more than the $2m person. I personally think the reason we chase money is because there's nothing else to do. That's the primary game. Being able to call yourself a good chaser is the ultimate currency, much more so than having better stuff. Friend A and Friend B could get along swimmingly well if they were both great at chasing money. Similarly, maybe Friend B is better at making money and has an edge over Friend A, who is mediocre at earning and is just spending more as a means of compensating for this relative deficit. |
