we're not gonna see self-learning "superintelligent" AI anytime soon. LLMs are pretty much maxed out on their qualitative capabilities already. IMO we will see LLM agents taking a bunch of white collar jobs, and normies getting obsessed with AI companions, but nothing truly next level transformative of society beyond that for several years
the next big thing is gonna be setting up AIs that can interact directly with the real world which will (hopefully) allow them to actually build world-models based on self-learning feedback from their own actions and their own sensory data. IMO this is gonna require robotics advancements but some people are convinced that this can be done by simulating a virtual world with the same laws of physics as the real world and letting the AI go to town in that. i have no idea if that's actually feasible and realistic or not
