- a lot of young people who make 160k who hate the idea of paying taxes for social services they don't need

- personal responsibility

Man, people just want to be able to go out and drink a beer and smoke a joint on public streets with their bros without having to worry about being hassled by a bunch of pseudo-fascist pigs. At the same time, no one really wants to keep paying for niggers to have bigger and bigger rims on their shit box cars.

I think there are a few strains -

1) Big city republicans who aren't into the ARE COUNTRY religion schtick the Republicans pull on the national level

2) IT people

3) 60/70s libs, esp scientists, who see the erosion of civil liberties promulgated by the New Left's move towards socialism and the party's hijacking by Alinsky's "any means necessary" tactics and paternalism.

4) Economics people who all see that Socialism is a TTT in decline

5) Young republicans in the closet

6) ACLU types who recogize for all intents and purposes, this regime isn't much different than Bush except it's doing even more to quash dissent

7) People who are sick of seeing 1/3 - 1/2 of their paycheck goes to lazy shits who don't work, who don't want to work, and who drink 40oz's on the stoops of buildings.

8) Patent types. Overlaps with IT and Scientists who are deeply skeptical of the New Left and its rampant subjectivism

libertarianism is very much inside the box ideas. its preaching the theories from econ 101 about the invisible hand that you learn in a classroom and being blindly faithful to that ideology.

libertarianism don't present new ideas, it just regurgitates the same argument that free-market capitalism is perfect in a vacuum

You have no idea what you're talking about. Read Spooner for a classic (No Treason no. 9 is one of the most original works of political philosophy ever written in America), and some of the stuff on patents out of Mises Institute.

Ron Paul and Ayn Rand, sure, a retard could come up with that. Read the thinkers and quit with the straw men. There are a lot of Libertarian heavy hitters.

It's so cool you haven't heard of it.

Read the Invisible Committte/Tarnac 9 manifesto "The Coming Insurrection" from Semiotexte. That's all the rage with the pseudo-intellectual/professional artist UWS crowd. I'll summarize. Capitalism bad. Technology bad. Go live in the woods, shit in a ditch, blow things up, class revolution follows.

Think Unabomber, but French, and more Marxist. Ridiculously popular in edgy, pseudo-intellectual circles in the last year, not because it's good, but because it has a whiff of danger, because these moron Frog grad students went out and committed some actual crimes.

No, but they'll need it. Obama and the New Dems "soft on crime, heavy on entitlements" philosophy is ridiculous. Taken with Clinton/Bush's expensive wars abroad, we're going to need a leader with balls since we'll have to make drastic cuts.

I hope it's a libertarian and it's soon. A big problem is "Are Country" and these fucking moron Republican candidates people keep voting for.

If it's not and the Dems take the hit in midterms and Obama is re-elected after a slight upturn - which would lead to further expansion of the Fed'l Gov't, we're looking at a Weimar situation - where a powerful right or left-wing iron-fist socialist could easily co-opt the fed'l apparatus and suspend liberties in a state of emergency.

All that's needed is a Reichstag trigger moment (which arguably we already had). Softening crack laws and the laxening in the war on drugs or terrorism might provide it.

the tea party was originally viewed as libertarian, since it was basically a grassroots movement to support Ron Paul. Then Palin & Co came along and highjacked it along with all the ARE COUNTRY dumbs and religious zealots. Unfortunately for true libertarians, the tea party is still viewed as the major representation of libertarianism and i know plenty of people who think the viewpoints that the tea pary hold is equivalent of libertarianism.

I liked Giuliani and would vote for him for pretty much anything, but he's not really a libertarian. Most DAs aren't. They tend to be either conservative pragmatists or "law and order liberals".

I like Rice for AG of late. I hope to fuck she beats Schneiderman - who is easily the worst AG candidate in years. Donovan's not bad either.

Young, misogynistic, intellectually immature strivers tend to beget this type of faggoty. Libertarians are disproportionately young, male, high earning, Catholic, (read: more likely to being making their money than HAVE money, relative to WASP and Jews) and educated (to a point, libertarianism is overrepresented in people with Bachelor's degrees, but not in people with Ph. D.s; liberals are far more overrepresented among college graduates and FAR more among those with advanced degrees).

According to Cato and Pew's own research, its really the populist that are most at odds with the libertarians. Of course, there are almost no populist types on this website. Its conservatives, liberals and libertarians.

Liberals have more or less the same income and racial make-up as libertarians; Liberals are simply older, more likely to be female, better educated, less church going, and less likely to be evangelical or Catholic. Or, put in another way, less likely to be a faggot on this message board.

EDIT: Should have been a capital-C catholic. If there is one thing libertarians are not, it is small-c catholic.

This thread is now about Stabby's own personal movement from "conservative" to "liberal" in law school, brought about by his own desire to fit in with better educated, less-churchgoing females.

how do you draw the conclusion they are intellectually immature? simply because liberals are overrepresented among those with advanced degrees? many advanced degree holders have received zero economics training, so i don't think this tells you much. the GSS shows that higher IQ tend people to be more economically conservative (in the american sense) and socially liberal, which is a far more telling fact

I'm fine correlating younger, less educated, more religious, (specifically more likely to be evangelical or catholic and more likely to be frequent church goers), and less likely to be costal and more likely to be southern or mid-western than liberals, etc. with being intellectually immature.

That said, my source for that particular comment was not the cato paper on libertarian demographics (http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa580.pdf), but rather this site (http://xoxohth.com/main.php?forum_id=2).

Brilliant analysis considering that religion is one of the topics most frequently lampooned by XOXO's libertarian leaning population.

I really like all the comments saying that libertarians are "intellectually immature" or "aspie" or some other such thing. It means that the movement toward freedom, both economically and personally, is picking up steam. Those who did not pick up on this earlier often feel left out and need to attack those who support libertarianism. This is good. It means it's becoming relevant.
