If this assumption was true - that superintelligent AI is on the horizon on the time span of a handful of years - it would mean that everything that we do in the countdown to that event matters *more*, not less. Our actions and choices become almost infinitely more important and meaningful
If God announced to the world that He would reveal himself to the world and begin to directly interfere in our affairs after 3 years pass, would people say "welp, it's over" and just drop out and dick around during those 3 years? Obviously not - anyone with any worth would do the opposite
It's a very very weird sentiment for these people to have. My charitable interpretation of it is that they mean that everyone should be dropping out of certain things and focusing on other things instead, and they are just not precise enough with their words |

This is all assuming the common assumptions about 'singularity' Superintelligent Godlike AI, where once general AI becomes self-aware it is able to increase its own intelligence and capabilities at an incomprehensibly fast speed. I don't personally believe this is coming anytime soon (or maybe ever), but when these people talk about this stuff, that's what they mean
If a person *really* believed that this event was coming in just a few years, they'd be making some seemingly pretty kooky decisions and actions. So it seems suspicious/weird to me when these otherwise very smart people say this stuff, since none of them are doing these things themselves |
