It almost certainly doesn't have the capability to invade and occupy Guyana. And if they tried, the U.S. (not to mention many of Venezuela's neighbors) would love to kick Maduro out of power, and this would give them a great excuse to do so. (And it would probably be very easy to do. I'm sure the CIA could bribe a couple key generals to launch a coup.)
No, Maduro recognizes that Venezuela is an utter shitshow under his leadership and that he's about as popular as cancer. He's trying to use the Putin playbook where you pick fights with your neighbors to distract the public from the fact that you are running the country into the ground. The difference, though, is that Russia has at least some semblance of a military. I think Maduro is smart enough to know that if he actually tries any kind of military invasion, it's going to end very badly for him. |
