people like us and most poasters are going to be fine no matter what, but this could assfuck the working class pretty hard. he's basically shifting revenue generation onto poors. huge tax cuts while we replace the money with a consumption tax (tariffs), which is inevitably going to be a burden on the lower classes.
surprised my NOAA friend hasn't asked me for another $1k yet. |

i have a couple buddies the run a design and engineering consulting business. during COVID i remember talking to him about this. he is a big proponent of bringing back manufacturing here too, but he also said that it would take *years* for the workforce to adjust. he said aside from economics you also can't build shit in the US because we don't have the right skillsets anymore.
on top of that companies aren't going to take the risk of building here with inconsistent and erratic leadership. it would take years of consistent economic policy and also the stomach to weather the transition. as we saw from the panic after a 10% drop in the markets, this seems unlikely.
so anyway the working class is fucking regardless. at least we'll be fine. fuck this gay earth. |

the value of labor is low and it's going to keep getting lower. we simply don't need the labor to produce the resources we need. with the technology we have today we could live in a utopia. but the problem is that because of human nature it's hard to create and enforce a way that divides resources. capitalism is great when every person willing to work can earn enough to provide for themselves, but that falls apart when we don't need the labor. and the corporations need consumers... i mean, the entire point of a business is to provide a good or service to people.
the stop-gap we've used until now is a bunch of fake jobs to prop up capitalism. and that's falling apart. not everyone is capable of white collar work. and those jobs are vulnerable. ones of the reasons we don't reform the tax code or health insurance is that it will cost a ton of jobs.
all this is made even harder by global competition. which is why i think we need to be self sufficient. COVID and the unavailability of essential goods proved how at risk we are by relying on other countries for everything. and how valuable will our dollars be to buying these goods if there's a shift in global powers?
human nature aside, we're also deadlocked by partisanship. i don't see any solutions happening in the near future. ultimately there will have to be some sort of economic reform, and that's always messy. we've seen it from julius ceasar to the russian revolution. the wealthy aren't going to just give their shit up and if they don't have an incentive to provide for the proles they won't, and if the proles are out of options they'll eat the wealthy. but in a post scarcity society where everyone can own nothing but still survive with soylent and a shitbox apartment, will they ever?
this is all naval gazing because nothing major is going to happen in our lifetimes. i'm just glad we managed to hoard enough resources that we're not going to suffer if a transition period happens in our lives. |
