Historically kids worked in the family business, such as helping with cobbling shoes (“corporate family”). They would basically be their dads apprentice. In the 1960s, dads were employed well away from their kids.

They would usually roll around in mixed age groups, and that was how kids learned to fit in and function. Jonathan Haidt has some interesting research around it.
