I used to amuse myself by imagining a lib utopia in which all evil was attributed to the sole surviving straight white male - the scapegoat. That is where we are headed - and after this guy is cast out in exile, surely he would be the only one who understood his society of origin. Perhaps his descendants could then create a mirror society, in which the diverse were the scapegoats - and then the two societies could clash.
This is all good fun - but really, doesn't it describe the real story arc of both families and societies?
A similar dynamic holds when you consider physicalism. Because the physical universe is determined via observations, the limit of physicalism is that there must be some "smallest observer" that cannot observe itself. Say the observer converts himself into a mirror of sorts, after converting the rest of the physical universe into a mirror - then, by definition, there is no more physical universe, or no more observer.
But where did the observer flee to? Well, perhaps it makes sense to say it fled to some other "plane" - leaving physical "stuff" below it. but then, having the nature of a perfect mirror, it would again cline toward doing the same thing but in reverse.
This is the typical problem of science. Scientists tend to be pretty shitty at thought experiments, because they cling to a religious pseudobelief in an unmoved mover. So we get some purchase from a scientific theory - say, thermodynamics - but when you point out that the theory is flawed due to infinite regress, people get butthurt and start going all pharisee on you. I'm like dude chill, we elected Trump, get over it.

I alluded to the physicalist path - the above relates to mentalism. Let's say that physicalist robots decide to determine the path of all particles in space. So they freeze all of space via expansion so there's no motion, and one particle heads to the center of space in order to determine the path of all particles. At the very center of all stuff, this one particle has the ultimate physical power - as any direction it moves and anything it does will fully determine all possible future paths for the entire universe!
By hypothesis, however, the particle can ONLY move if acted upon by an OUTSIDE force - and there is no such force left! The final particle will have used its last degree of freedom in its final move to the center.
This is how the world can end by ice. But it's not the true death!

You need to step outside of a system to understand a system. But you can't influence a system from the outside. Yet the system doesn't exist, in its totality, without an outsider observing, if only because a property of a system is that it's observable. And a system can't be understood without some gap that permits observation from the outside, re-entry, and exit.
In process terms, a system comes into being through successive approximation - throwing out and reintegrating the scapegoat. One might say things move in a gradient from belief to understanding, or from part to whole. Bootstrapping to self-similarity.
A particle might contain the whole universe (in informational terms), but it can't contain itself.
Nehoo my existential wandering is near an end, having finally found the answer I was looking for re anergic, atypical depression, meaning, purpose, etc. Now to reduce to practice. Excited for the next season of xo!
