Kids need boundaries to feel safe and secure. They will push the boundaries until they meet granite. The problem is when parents don't say No, but let their kids keep pushing and never find granite. These parents are failing their kids. The pattern is: the kids keep pestering them, pushing them, until finally the parent blows up and loses her temper, or else relents and gives the kids what they want.
The correct approach is to say, "I told you once. If you keep pushing, there will be consequences", and then -- this is crucial -- to follow through with the consequences. Consistently. Every single time.
Physical violence is rarely necessary and then only in the limit. I swatted my kid on the butt ONCE, at age 4 or 5, not even hard obviously, but that's all it took to establish the precedent that when Dad says something, he really means it.
It's important to be dispassionate, not angry, explain why it is happening, and reassure them afterward you still love them. |
