It is the oldest, private law school in the country and is best known for pumping out local practitioners. Primarily, Albany law grads end up in three places: NYS government, local private practice (including some very large lobbying firms), and as Staff Attorneys.
Like most law schools, the top ten percent of the class from Albany Law tend to end up doing judicial clerkships, or working in large NYC/Boston law firms.
Not a big difference here between SUNY Buffalo Law and Albany Law School. The only thing the affiliations with the State system is going to get you is a cheaper education . . . but then again, you have to live in Buffalo for three years, yikes.
Regarding "Union University" -- Union University is a very loose affiliation of local Colleges and Universities in the Capital Region. The name doesn't do much justice to it considering that there isn't really any connection between the schools with the excpetion that there are a few joint degree programs, mainly a B.A./MBA, J.D./MBA and and M.D./MBA program.
Union University includes Union College, Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy, the Sage Colleges and the Union Graduate College.
Albany Law School is on par with schools like Suffolk, but with a particular regional twist. Anyone who is a lawyer in Albany, went to Albany Law, and the general economic outlook for those seeking a career in the legal professional in Albany is very positive.
That said, it's not Harvard. It's not even a low first tier or a second tier school. It is a school for people who want to practice. It is high stress like any other law school, and extremely competitive. |

My cousin describes the school as a place with 30 supercompetitve kids that take law school very, very seriously, and everybody else who just kind of shows up. She also explained that the new dean has made a lot of changes and that the school was asleep ten years ago. Now, she says that ALS is doing everything it can not to be so boring and has hired many new faculty and pushes its clinics. She told me that the faculty brings a lot of politics into the classroom and use class time as their advocacy platforms. If you agree with the prof, you get an easy B+, if you are disinterested in gay marriage or don't think George Bush is the Devil, you get a B- or lower. Also, she said that the school's endowment is really low and it had been neglected for 30 years. Money is always a problem at ALS.
There are 200 law schools in the USA, and 190 of them have a better rep or fewer problems than ALS. There is no reason to apply to ALS. |

Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, the last decade has brought a wealth of new scientific understanding about the disease that provides hope for the future.
Lou GehrigLou Gehrig first brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. Most commonly, the disease strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. ALS has cut short the lives of other such notable and courageous individuals as Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Senator Jacob Javits, actors Michael Zaslow and David Niven, creator of Sesame Street Jon Stone, television producer Scott Brazil , boxing champion Ezzard Charles, NBA Hall of Fame basketball player George Yardley, pro football player Glenn Montgomery, golfer Jeff Julian, golf caddie Bruce Edwards, British soccer player Jimmy Johnstone, musician Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter), photographer Eddie Adams, entertainer Dennis Day, jazz musician Charles Mingus, composer Dimitri Shostakovich and U.S. Army General Maxwell Taylor.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. A common first symptom is a painless weakness in a hand, foot, arm or leg, which occurs in more than half of all cases. Other early symptoms include speech swallowing or walking difficulty.
The biological mechanisms that cause ALS are only partially understood. The only known cause of ALS is a mutation of a specific gene: the SOD1 gene. This mutation is believed to make a defective protein that is toxic to motor nerve cells. The SOD1 mutation, however, accounts for only 1 or 2 percent of ALS cases, or 20 percent of the familial (inherited) cases.
Familial ALS represents between five to 10 percent of all cases. The rest arise spontaneously and mysteriously, making seemingly random attacks on previously healthy adults. ALS can strike anyone, anytime.
Physicians have limited choices for treating ALS, and the options that do exist have come into use within the last 10 years. Studies suggest that patients' length of survival and quality of life are enhanced by night-time breathing assistance early in the course of the disease and by aggressive application of alternate feeding options to assure good nutrition once swallowing becomes difficult. At this time, Riluzole® is the only drug that has been approved by the FDA for treatment of ALS. In clinical trials, Riluzole® has shown a slight benefit in modestly increasing survival time.
Stem cell and gene therapy are promising areas of research. In a variety of studies, ALS mouse models are being used to develop treatments that may someday lead to similar human clinical trials. Gene therapy is one field of research where The ALS Association is concentrating support for more study.
More significant advances of research into ALS has occurred in the last decade than all of the time since Charcot identified the disease. Advances in technology and the genetic revolution are aiding researchers in unlocking the ALS mystery. As more scientists focus on this perplexing disease, the outlook for new understanding brightens each day.

The weather is a little more harsh in Syracuse.
Both schools are located in upstate, mid-sized cities. Syracuse is a little more quiet than Albany. Both cities have 3-5 "bigger" law firms, and locals will tell you that those firms are on par with NYC BigLaw (believe it if you want). Neither school recruits especially well downstate. Albany has more courts, state government and executive branch jobs. For both schools, the safety jobs are either working as a real estate attorney in Utica (or some other similar town) or as a contract personal injury attorney for some attorney mill. Maybe, there are more job opportunities at Albany.
Albany has had some issues in the last ten years. Syracuse had issues in the 1990s.
If you check out lawschoolbynumbers.com, the student numbers are pretty much the same. Albany seems to be throwing some more money at better students.
Go whichever you like better in your gut. |
