Subject: of law school

My first semester grades likely put me close to or at the bottom of the class. I have a 2.6 on a 3.3 scale. Go to a T1, but outside the Top 14. Family agreed to cover law school tuition before I enrolled, because they really wanted me to become a lawyer and I wasn't willing to pay for law school (as in, had they not wanted to pay, I would have continued at my desk job and tried to work my way up the corporate ladder).

My family is still willing to pay for the rest of law school, but I kind of feel like an asshole taking their money (they are covering tuition plus much of my living expenses) to graduate at the bottom of the class.

I understand most of the material very well, and think I just suck at law school exams. I still believe I would be an excellent real estate or personal injury attorney, but worry that the emphasis the legal profession puts on credentialing and academic success may prevent me from establishing myself and succeeding. I am a great public speaker and salesman and think I would be very effective in front of a jury.

I also could go back to my previous field and make around 50-60k/year and work my way up from there. Would lose the parental support.

Xo bros, what do I do? Sry for long poast.

Hey brother, I was this same position several years ago (except the whole parents offering to pay part) and I ended up pulling the trigger and dropping out. Best decision of my life.

Two more years of miserable law school shit, pissing away a ton of your inheritance, then throwing yourself into a job market where you'll have to fight for scraps with a million other young attorneys with better credentials than you. Not the credited path brother.

Not to mention, if you're lucky enough to end up getting employed as a lawyer, you'll be in one of the most stressful professions in existence. Fuck that.

I'm now making 65K working remotely from home for a software company, having fun with an amateur MMA career and fucking a ton of OKCupid sluts. Can't tell you how many friends from law school gchat or Facebook message me tell me how miserable they are trying to find jobs and how much they wish they would have done the same. Good luck to you brother.

That doesn't prepare you for the closed-book essay exams where you have to scribble down everything you know in a few hours, which is what you usually have to do at schools outside the T14.

Word. But tbf, I think there's only marginal benefit to be gained from any kind of preparation outside of reading cases, going to class, and doing an outline. Some people's brains just aren't wired to be successful in taking essay exams that are usually closed book with strict time limitations. Sure, in some cases poor law school grades are caused by (relatively) poor intelligence or lack of studying, but I think in many others it could be chalked up to various isolated neurological deficits that would otherwise be compensated for by other areas of the brain in a real world scenario as a practitioner.

Ah, if you come from an engineering background you probably just needed to learn how to write period. Your story is almost certainly the exception to the rule when it comes to dudes with bad law grades. OP is probably just another liberal arts fag who doesn't have a problem writing in general, but inherently sucks at law exams.

Can you work while you are in school?

Sounds like you WANT to be a shitlaw lawyer. If thats the case and you are willing to have little income when you graduate there is a path. Basically never go to class again except for exams. Find a job to get yourself a regular paycheck during law school. Save as much money as possible while in school and to defray expenses. You can make a 2.6 with two hands tied and a blindfold on as an upper classman at a T1. If any professor tries to press you on attendance go off on a diatribe about how you are neck deep in loans to pay for their salaries and you have to work to pay rent because your parents are dead. They'll probably leave you alone. And eventually you'll have the stupid degree.

If your parents are not super wealthy though I agree it may not be best to burden them. They do have to retire eventually and parents will try to do anything their kids want even if its not in the families best interest like law school can be.

I was in a similar position a few years back. As ridiculous as it seems, following the advice of this bizarrely racist chatblog saved my life. I'm just now finishing up my second year of dental school, and I couldn't be happier.
