Last night there was a murder on O block and a bunch of people tweeted at him saying he was next and that they wished he was there so they could kill him. Apparently he just got out of the hospital a few days ago after being shot and now he has a target on his head.

It's amazing how much worse some aspects of our society are than even the most pessimistic dystopian author could come up with.
Everybody participating in these twitter conversations is one of the most privileged people to ever walk the planet. They have, in their pocket, a device that gives them access to vast swaths of knowledge and the ability to learn about anything they care to-- historical, scientific, philosophical, whatever strikes their fancy. That same device also lets them communicate and learn with anybody in the world, subject to some language barriers that are becoming weaker every day. It's an amazing thing and that it blends into the background shows that we have become a race of technomages, but it happened so gradually that we didn't even really notice.
But instead they choose to use the device to threaten murder, gloat about past murders, share rumors about upcoming murders, etc. They were literally fucking handed everything and this is the path they chose. I'm sure more money for "dem programs" is the answer though. |
