The ONLY redeeming part about it is if you dig deep enough there's oil. (http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=1606821&forum_id=2#17663776) |

Date: April 1st, 2011 4:55 PM Author: electric thirsty locale queen of the night There's money. I wouldn't call either a big city though both are certainly sprawling. Odessa is working-class hick central while midland has the bankers and business men. Other than that, it's a godawful part of the country to live in. Date: April 1st, 2011 5:17 PM Author: Pearl Church Building right; that's how things were in the late 80's when the book was written. but i think a lot of the area's blacks have moved away to houston or dallas over the decades. plus, the dilution by the deluge of mexicans. Edit: it really is phenomenally large. One reason is you have unlimited space there so rather than build a garage they just spread Tarmac into the desert. But the whole city goes to the games. |

Date: November 4th, 2026 4:40 PM Author: Slime Wall Climber (BettieLasikEyes) Ector County ISD, the district that serves Odessa, is 82.2% Hispanic. There is no amount of Mojo lore that will bring another Texas HS football championship to a place with those demographics. I believe Odessa High (the minority school in the book is about 90+% Hispanic and Permian is about 75% now. My point stands. For reference, I believe Permian was 30 something % Hispanic back in 1988 when the book was written, but don't worry, they are natural conservatives.
Went to farmers market in the nicer part of town couple years back. For reference, this is the far Eastern area very near the Midland County line border. To the north of HWY 191 there are some impressive McMansions inhabited by oilfield supply co millionaires, Jeet hotel chain owners and I suppose a doctor or 2. At the market, I was a huge beefy Cholo in his 20's with a #35 White and Black Permian jersey with "Boobie" written on the back name block. This went surprisingly well with his khaki Dickies and white sneakers, and I suppose the ghosts of 1988 still ring out.
I was at the courthouse over there a bit ago, and Brian Chavez was there chatting about the Cowboys with the Sheriff deputies at the screening station. Then he happened to wrap it up and get on the elevator with me. I don't know him personally. He was fat as fuck. |
