But, aside from the fact that either extreme will support their ideals categorically in general, the mentality of the modern left is very clearly one which assumes that it has the moral high-ground to such an extent that debate isn’t possible or desirable. The right is assumed to be morally backwards, so they may as well be written off rather than taken seriously. This is the cult of Jon Stewart, John Oliver, etc.: the truth is stacked in the left’s favor, and the right can be mocked for not seeing it.
Either side could be construed as ‘totalitarian,’ but the mainstream left is less intellectually tolerant than it has been in the past, and this, I think, is a unique characteristic of the modern left. The extremes of a party will always be intolerant, but a form of intellectual intolerance has become a part of mainstream liberal thought |
