He talks about how things were going well but someone scammed way too many people and the customer base dried up. He had nostalgia for Glen Ross because it was a time of stable income and he wasn't working that hard.
Glengarry is obviously the hot new real estate operation that will be easier to sell because it sells itself and the leads are all people with a good income who are ready to buy.
In sales you never want a shit salesman to burn through your best leads because they are expensive. You would rather dole them out to your top people slowly so they have a high chance of closing on each one. It's typical for shit salesmen to have to go through garbage leads. I was terrible at sales back in the day and I had to go through it shit leads. There was a woman in our office who was like Ricky Roma. She put up kooky numbers. My boss told me once that the whole point of his job was to find the next Roma. One guy or gal with talent does more than the whole rest of the sales room. |

every sales office has a roma. often rotating. gene likes to point out he used to be top dog. the best salespeople are pretty eratic and usually abusing a substance. you know how drug addicts are frequently charismatic and persuasive? so they work in bursts of motivation. make a few big sales and you're living large and fucking off until the money runs dry, and then you're scrambling like gene suddenly.
hot women break this mold, they're usually chill and guys just buy stuff cause they're hot. and indians, who never stop hussling, although they rarely reach roma tier because they smell bad and are transparently out to fuck people over. |

My uncle told me if you go into sales, marry a woman with a stable job so you can weather the lean times. He said it's not even about work ethic or personality but just that every era has ebbs and flows.
My mom is in sales and she was just broke for 9 months and now got a huge windfall. It be like that. It's like winning the lotto. But these people never save for a rainy day. Easy come, easy go. |

Like obviously Billy was on an insane hot streak from Gish up through Melon Collie. Adore was "Okay" at best. But why keep going? And in interviews he talks about how he's really butthurt that people come up to him and say I love 1979 but the rest is shit. If I ever wrote one song that cool I'd be extremely proud for the rest of my life.
But why does he keep going? All the unlistenable trash he's added to the collection. I don't get it. Every songwriter has a peak period and gets burned out at some point, afaik. Wouldn't he trade in the last however many albums of trash for one more big hit? |
