Law school applicants (including black applicants) take a bunch of touchy-feely easy liberal arts classes in college, so there are quite a few AA candidates with high GPAs.
Med school applicants take large, somewhat difficult, curved, and blindly graded courses (and courses in which professors fail people -- no gentleman's B+). Whatever you want to blame the gap on, you can probably guess how that works out.
So they have to dig deeper and use far more blunt AA policies to get the desired quotas of each race.

But medical students are on average smarter than law students. It's still a minimum comp exam with a high pass rate. First time MD takers pass at all steps at a 97% rate. |

i know people who got in with low mcats and did extremely well on the usmle/boards. thats the whole point. the mcat is the hardest part for most and the main barrier. actual med school is just memorization. |
