LOL, 1st NASCAR race I watched in full.

My college roomate was a real redneck. When in Rome. It's not bad once you get into it.

Roommate comes back, says "I miss anything?" Yeah, that Dale Earhardt dude died, I said.

Lots of fucked up shit on TV that year.

He was in disbelief. He thought maybe I got the name wrong cause I didn't really watch it. When I mentioned Jr seemed to be doing well, he knew it was real.

I remember, "Nah, mang, not the Intimidator. The fucking intimaidator. Was it his son?"

I really had no idea who the guy was, but he seemed to be driving aggressively and seemed to be a solid competitor.

I put on ESPN (even though I think it was on all the channels), then he called up one of his friends. I gave him a beer. He was really bummed.

His face looked like a small child upon realizing that yes, they killed Bambi's mother, sans the crying.

LOL, yeah, my roomie was a good dude.

Needless to say, it's tough to ever match up when your first Nascar race has a fatality, an oedipal conflict, and mass media coverage.

I watch it occasionally, but mostly only in "When in Rome" scenarios.

When I was a young lawyer, I had a client that invented a device to alert the drivers on the track that an accident had occurred.

The guy was trying to get business from all the hype from when Earnhardt was killed. His pitch was that a driver could react much faster from a sound than visually depending upon where he was on the track. The way it worked was that you installed the device under the bottom of the car. So on the radio, every driver can communicate with his individual crew on a frequency that only the driver and the crew could hear, but not the other drivers, but every driver hears what comes from the tower on the tower's frequency.

So the guys in the tower could push a button and all drivers would automatically hear the ALERT sound at the same time. Such was the pitch.

The guy was traveling all over the USA promoting this and physically getting his device into a lot of the lower level tracks with the hope that he could get it mandated by NASCAR and rake in the cash.

I was his lawyer and had a few points in the company, but I don't give a shit about car racing.

He was always goading me to come with him and see how it worked in real life, and I always found an excuse not to go. Finally, I relented and traveled with him to one of the Chicagoland tracks.

This was not NASCAR, but in digging into all of this, I was amazed at how much money it took to even race late model cars at the lower level. The owners of the racing crew were always some high prole types who owned 50 Jiffy Lubes or something like that.

Most of the drivers at this level were very young kids like 19-25. Most were not picked for talent, but the sons of the car owners and stuff like that.

I still can't stand car racing, but I was able to watch the race from the infield and was impressed at how competitive it was. After the race was over the pussy that was lined up to see these young racer guys and get autographs was next level (I didn't get any of it).

We ended up chilling and hanging out that night with Angel Manfredy, I think he fought a few times for the lightweight belt. He beat Aruturo Gatti as I recall, but Mayweather had KO'd him in his title shot. I met him a year or two after his last fight.

My guy never got his shit mandated by NASCAR and ended up marrying and ex Vegas whore if I recall. I made shit on my points in the company - it ended up worthless.
