it could not be more Jewish. but it sure isn't portraying the Jews in a positive light. and it is well done.

seemed like for all the broad comedy about rural whites there was an underlying sympathy for them as well. for me, that was the difference between a funny comedic farce and mere derision.

good list, agree on all the S's, but burn after reading is B/C. this tier list suggests they are on a downward trend overall 📉

I didn't rate it so high on my first watch but rewatched it recently and thought it was great. Maybe just because compared to modern day movies it seems better.

Their films, more than most, appeal to different people for very different reasons. I would have an almost completely different ranking than you but I can understand where you're coming from.

This is a good list. What’s remarkable about their movies is that I find it completely acceptable for you to like some of their movies I don’t like as much and to dislike some of my favorites. They’re very idiosyncratic.

Yeah. I never cared for Fargo but I get why a lot of people do. They're just very talented writers and filmmakers so there's almost always something to appreciate. There aren't a lot of filmmakers that are almost always funny, but funny in very different ways. A Serious Man, i think, has some hilarious moments but that humor is completely different than Burn After Reading.

why is there a tier higher than A this makes no sense

anyway True Grit (2010) is the best movie ever made

their TG was so much better than the original in nearly every way. but, sadly, Jeff Bridges completely missed the comic element in his character. Wayne did it much better. all the other roles were vastly better in the Coen Bros version. and the music was 180.

everyone should read the Portis novella. it's even better than the Coen Bros film.

the novella is goat potus

Portis based Maddie on old Arkansas biddies he knew as a cub reporter, and imagined them in their youths. of course the conceit is that the story is 80 year old maddie telling the story of 14 year old maddie. this is lost somewhat in the movie.

cr observation.

Hailie Steinfeld's version of Mattie -- the protagonist in the novella, the secondary character in the Wayne version, and once again the protagonist in the Coen Bros -- is so much better than Kim Darby (who was laughably inadequate). that fact alone makes it impossible to favor the Wayne version over the Coen Bros version.

and as much as i like Glen Campbell he was no actor. Damon did a fine job.

Have now seen them all.

Ladykillers is a D, Hanks is awful in it, story is dumb

A Serious Man: B. Very Well crafted but the story didn't resonate with me.

Ballad of Buster Scruggs: C, some great stories and some absolute misses too. At the end felt like a waste of time. Nothing tied together in any way. Maybe should have been a TV series.
