i don't think it's fair to presume rejection unless you know the judge definitely always hires before the hiring deadline. if they take an informal approach to the plan (as you seem to suggest), not having heard back isn't necessarily a bad sign.

Does anyone know how the current clerks filter clerkship apps by school? Is it only by typing in specific schools or does Oscar provide a t10 T50 option?

Completely the discretion of each judge. OSCAR doesn't let you filter by USNWR rank, if that's what you're asking.

My judge would go with top 5-10% across the board, then have his secretary cull it down from there. Larger for a handful of the top schools. You can sort by rank. And he'd exempt some of the top 25-ish schools if they didn't rank and have his secretary cull through the GPAs for the top ones.

Then he'd glance at them, about 10 seconds each, and stack them into piles: A, A-, B+, B, B-, garbage, etc., and that was his rough priority for each of them. He'd start with the A's, closest look, hand them to his clerks. And then if they needed to, they'd dip into the A-'s.

But that's him. Some judges pick certain schools. Some prefer different ranks for different schools.

Glad to hear that they can't filter out all lower ranked schools so easily. What's been your experience or what you've heard about the chances for students at lower-ranked schools--read 90-100--but that are in the top 5 students, not percent, are published, are on the law rev ed bd, etc etc?

My judge hired a true TTT grad who was #1 in his class, hard sciences UG from a public ivy, LR board.

But it can vary widely. You're better off with your local judge than a broad application. That's how most low-ranked students get in.

Conventional wisdom has been that the #1 or #2 student in the class who is also LR board has a good shot at the local COA.

I've seen COA work out regularly for people with these credentials at the local Tier 1. It can even happen at a "true TTT," but rarely... even for #1/LR EIC.

Below that, D. Ct. is a decent possibility for the top 10-20 students at the local school.

I know in my circuit, there are at least 2 COA clerks who were the #1 or #2 student at schools ranked 50-100 in USNWR. One of these people turned out to be awesome and highly competent; the other was horrid (I know this from their co-clerks).

I know of one district court clerk who was #1 at a true TTT, and who was an acceptable clerk. There are probably more.

in my experience the #1 type students from true TTTs tend to be pretty bad in comparison to top 1/4 to median HYS (few other T14) types. the #1 students from Tier 1 schools tend to be comparable or at least pretty good. i'm sure experiences vary widely, however.

One of (SDNY/DDC/ND IL) this morning. District court. It moves fast. Happened to be busy right at work when calls went out and by the time I tried to schedule the interview, the slots for the 1st day of interviewing (no idea how many slots there are) were mostly gone.

Do the less competitive (non-major city) district courts tend to stick pretty closely to the first day/morning calling or is that a little more scattered? Anybody know?

Do judges normally call all in one day or do sometimes they call more applicants later on?
