Currently I have a beat up Jetta wagon TDI. I get like 50 mpg.

I am considering buying a newer version of the car. Mint condition, leather seats.

It has a TDI as well, but is an automatic so the fuel economy will be more like 40mpg.

I drive ~70k miles per year.

The prospective car has a brand new engine just installed by the dealer.

Should I sacrifice some fuel economy for a nicer looking/driving vehicle?

If you want to continue down the beater car path, it seems like a good option.

A new base-model Camry hybrid or Prius can be had for like $28k. Get something new and modern and still have 50+mpg.

Gotcha.

The issue is that this generation of the TDI gets you like 40-42mpg. At my rate that's like $3k more in fuel annualized.

I am partial to the 1.9 TDI over the 2.0 common rail. The latter was fabulous power etc but diesel gate and it was quite complicated. The 1.9 is a tractor engine.

I think I'm not getting it.

Realistically I could sell my current car for 2000. The new car would be 7000+registration = 7400, minus the 2000 = 5400. It would cost me 2k more every year in fuel so back to 7400 for first year of ownership.

Yes it's nicer but I just don't see the value. Also the potential for higher repair costs is there, in light of the DSG transmission.

248k. The TDI goes 500k and mine has been impeccably maintained. Manual transmission so at most a clutch in the next year, worst case I have to find a used gearbox for $400.

Only thing is my car is beat up (was totaled after I got rammed by an Isuzu truck) and I wasn't able to get the "new" body parts on perfectly.

70k isnt possible even for an uber driver. youd have to be some prole who lives 30 miles from mcdonalds and 30 miles from a 7-eleven in the other direction and just drive back and forth buying chicken nuggets and monster energy drinks. even then youd probably need a decent inheritance to fund your lifestyle.

70k is a ton. That’s 300 plus miles every work day. You would have to be both in a rural area and have a job that was majority driving.

The only people who I know of who would do that are hot shotters/expediters.

But, if I had to drive 70k a year I would 100% run an old VW TDI. Although I would get a comfortable seat.
