It seems some people at XOXO are willing to assume Trustafarian wasn't seriously planning to kill based on one or more of these inferences:
1. "Since he had no history of flame at XOXO, Trustafarian's threat should have been dismissed as bad flame."
2. "Since he edited his original threat to read 'wgwag', he elucidated his intent to convey a joke."
3. "Since he turned himself in, this demonstrated that his threat was in fact an empty one, for which he was sorry."
4. "Since it turns out he was a Boalt student, it is clear that he had no motive."
Does anyone else see the flaw in assuming someone is not legitimately homicidal based on these reasons alone?
Indulge this HYPO:
A blood thirsty copycat-wannabe logs on to XOXO as Trustafarian. Sure, he's had no history of flame in the past, but for once, he cannot contain his secret-- his plan to murder people on the campus of Hastings, where his ex-girlfriend attends. He posts the threat, but as soon as it seems that people are unexpectedly going to take him seriously and potentially report him to the authorities, he makes a last-ditch effort to save his ass by editing the threat. As cries for his investigation pile up on the board, he realizes he is fucked. Even if he wanted to go through with the shooting now, he couldn't because he still hasn't bought a gun. He believes the FBI will catch up with him soon, and in an attempt to seek lenience, he "turns himself in."
Is it not somewhat plausible that this or something similar was the case? If so, why would anyone be willing to risk lives by not reporting him?

The guy's OP, which edited after approximately 10 minutes, indicated that he would consider shooting people at Hastings tomorrow if it wasn't raining. I COULD NOT IN GOOD CONSCIENCE GAMBLE WITH PUBLIC SAFETY BY ASSUMING THIS WAS FLAME. It sucks that it actually did end up just being flame, and I feel somewhat bad for the guy, but the bottom line is that there was a perceivable threat. And if you don't agree, fuck you, I will fucking shoot your asses.

The guy's OP, which edited after approximately 10 minutes, indicated that he would consider shooting people at Hastings tomorrow if it wasn't raining. I could not in good conscience gambe with public safety by assuming this was flame.
It sucks that it actually did end up just being flame, and I feel somewhat bad for the guy, but the bottom line is that there was a perceivable threat. And if you don't agree, you can kiss my ass.

The critics forget that there were many levels of scrutiny before any of this even became news. When the poster called authorities they could have looked at the situation and just laughed it off. They didn't. When Hastings learned of the situation they too could have ignored it. They didn't. What I'm suggesting to you is that a lot of people with more experience and knowledge than you quite obviously DISAGREE with your judgment about this. A smart person would be humbled by that fact.

And, if he does feel the need to assert his LEGENDARY status in order to somehow prove a point to me, he shouldn't edit it out, and then AFTER editing it out, pretend he never said it and act confused about me making fun of him for calling himself a legend.
The fact is, he edited it out because it showcased that his legendary status is important to him, adding fuel to the speculation that he did the whole thing to attention whore. I NEVER had an issue with the reporting of the thread UNTIL i saw that he was attention whoring and suspected that he did it for that purpose.
Also, the XOXO community is important to a few users, but obviously he's not going to be writing any book, or making any money off of it if he does. |
