I have a tendency to say inflammatory things when I'm hanging with intelligent people and this dude's an intelligent bro - Oxford, LSE and maybe something stateside, idk - but he made some racist jokes so, being drunk, I was like "you know what I hate about affirmative action: The fact that it's rational to refuse to see black doctors because, on average, they were admitted to medical school with lesser qualifications." And he was like "but wait this is the most oppressed group in the nation. Think about what they overcame in order to get into medical school." I responded by pointing out that the wealthiest blacks tend to be the most likely to gain entry to medical school, but most importantly that oppression is

But most importantly that oppression isn't a proxy for ability. He didn't really have a response to that.

It depends on how you think it all works.

In libs minds, before med school,

Achievement = raw intellectual horsepower - oppression

and that after med school, everyone with the same raw intellectual horse power achieves the same skill in medicine. In that case, you should feel comfortable going to a black doctor even if they used AA to get in to school.

this might hold with other professions but not doctors

even if u could argue black doctors are LESS proficient than white doctors they still have to meet a minimum level of proficiency to pass the boards

is your goal always to see the most qualified doctor possible? I don't think it's that deep for most people, and knowing the doctor is qualified is enough (eassuming to you don't have AIDS or brain cancer or some shit)

It depends on the reason I'm seeing the doc. Minimal competence is fine for sprained ankles. For cardiothoracic surgery I'm gonna find the BEST.

I don't think AA applies to specializations, just admissions, so surgery isn't the best example here. when IQ really matters is when you have something uncommon that could easily be misdiagnosed.

Somehow I suspect that internships and residencies have "holistic" admissions policies. Honestly I don't know though.

Interesting theory though. Would make primary care practice the area within which g plays its most critical role.

neurology has the reputation as being the "brainiest" specialty among students and residents and shit

I think this is because it requires analysis of often nonspecific symptoms (neuro patients usually have shit like headaches, numbness, loss of coordination) that could mean a million fucking things and it takes a geek to really understand the nervous system as it's the most complex system in our bodies

that's basically what I said

most of medicine is routine and mundane and I think basic proficiency is enough...

certain exotic diseases/rare conditions, cancers, sophisticated surgeries may require the best of the best

I'm quite interested in medicine as a profession however and have done a lot of reading about it and most studies suggest that your particular doctor has little to do with your medical outcome (for instance there is a study comparing doctors in an ER and once the regression is done patients treated by each doctor had very similar chances of survival (the regression accounted for shit like time of day patients were admitted and day of the week and other crap I just don't remember to try to ensure that certain doctors weren't being penalized for ending up with more severe cases))

Woman is substance. Man is form. Implicit in any form is the ability to become another. Though implicit, this capacity is real; for molecules disintegrate and reconstitute. Overcoming reflects directly on the abilities of the form. Each form operates on its own unique schedule.

this holds with both other professions AND doctors. like with most other professions that require the passage of some sort of licensure test, as blue smoke alludes to, such tests test for minimal competence (if that). blacks, like in every profession, cluster at the bottom to the extent that they are admitted to the profession at all.

as elsewhere, blue smoke is wrong and looks foolish.

surprise surprise two huge racists think I'm wrong

I at least have the self awareness to realize that my opinions are just that, opinions. he ho early thinks he's "right" and I'm "wrong" in some philosophical sense. this happens when your main form of interaction occurs with xo posters who hype you up and you don't socialize enough elsewhere to ever have your ideas challenged.

why do you think that

I think I would have been more caring and had much better bedside manner than most doctors..l I bond w other people easily and take on others' problems as my own so I'd really need to choose a specialty with a good survival rate or else I'd be going crazy 24/7. Maybe obstetrics or something

It's not a matter of opinion - and most economists would agree - it's perfectly logical to realize that a black doctors have lower academic achievements on average.
