For another perhaps social factors of isolation and social intransigence play a role. Huge economic disparities between top 1 percent and the rest plays a role also at least according to studies. This last is highly distressing apparently.
What that last means for politics and social structuring after everyone reaches a baseline affluence remains to be seen but can be guessed at for sure.

Within a group you can specialize in roles that enable group survival. Depressed guy has a role to play even if he does not gather as much food or father as many children. He still passes on genes either by randomly fathering the occasional kid or helping the group that includes less depressed relatives who still carry some of the same genes (either recessive or expressed differently based on mix or experience). Also playing that role keeps depression in check so you are realistic guy who shoots down bad ideas and doesn’t waste energy on fruitless tasks and get overexcited about everything, not suicidal guy who stays in bed all day (no one would feed or protect that guy and he’d be dead in a month).
Modernity has systematically severed group ties and enabled a bunch of maladaptive spiraling behavior while preserving a safety net so depressed people don’t rapidly starve. Hence you see a surplus of depressed people manifesting worse symptoms for longer and not playing their original role in the group (because they are mostly isolated from groups). |
