0L.

If you came into law school focused exclusively on attaining an elite lit boutique job, what things would you do during law school other than crush grades?

the people i know who are at really good boutique (or just very very very good) lit firms did at least two of the following:

law review exec position

moot court

mock trial

clerkship with Article III judge

They were all on law review.

So does that then include kissing ass of well connected prof.

How important is a prof rec for prestigious clerkship assuming I already have grades to put me in contention?

Small elite firms dont really hire summers and when they do they hire like 1 person. It's almost a waste of time drafting cover letters for these places.

4 of the 5 "small elite" firms that I can come up with off the top of my head definitely hire summers, and usually more than one.

Susman (no quota)

Gibbs & Bruns (at least two, probably more)

Keker & Van Nest

Beck Redden

Bartlit is one that doesn't, although they do occasionally take 3Ls in the summer before their clerkships.

The whole "waste of time" thought process is ridiculous. You never know unless you try.

You have to be a star to get hired by these places. They're too small to have use for some mouthbreathing cog whose only value = attention to detail + willingness to work long hours + prestigious sounding degree.
