Charlton Heston had a string of historical epics from ben-hur to the late-60's, including that film. other good ones include El Cid and 'Agony and the Ecstasy' (which was about Michelangelo fighting with Pope Julius II). and of course, something like Khartoum would be completely unmakeable today due to depicting a colonial officer as a hero.
