(i) Vance is more self-aware than most politicians and can be authentic on Theo Vonn and similar shows. He's a bit corny at times but that's sort of a feature not a bug. But the bottom line is he has a lot of friendly media that he can do to show he's not the weirdo libs try to paint him as.
(ii) His military career is in a pretty good sweet spot. He was in the marines but as a journalist. So you can't really say he's inflating his battle heroics - because he was a journalist. But you can't say "he was just a journalist!" because like 90% of military these days is non-combat so its insulting to the whole military. |
