(Applicants will be directed to the SEC's online application process at Avue Digital Services. If you have previously applied for an SEC internship using AVUE and are having trouble logging in, a system technicality may require you to create a new account using a different email address.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM:

The Office will hire 50-60 1Ls, 2Ls, and JD/MBAs for its paid, 10-week Summer 2008 Honors Law Program. Approximately 55 were hired in 2007, out of over 1000 applications. Salary is SK-7 (1Ls), and SK-9 (2Ls). Interns may work in the DC headquarters or at 1 of 11 regional and district offices nationwide including: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. Interns attend seminars and workshops on federal securities laws, and are exposed to key individuals and institutions in securities and commodities industries, as well as in the legal profession. They work on research and writing projects, and are assigned a mentor.

The SEC was established by Congress in 1934 to safeguard investors and protect the integrity and stability of the securities markets. The Commission employs over 1000 attorneys nationwide.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

3.0 GPA, law review, moot court, legal aid, clinical experience, and relevant previous employment. Securities courses not a prerequisite. Non-U.S. citizens must meet State Department hiring conditions.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Submit application online and include location preferences as well as: cover letter, resume, transcript (undergraduate, graduate, and law school), list of current courses, and a 5-10 page legal writing sample. Selections are made on a rolling basis, so apply early. Deadline for 2008 has not yet been established. Applications are being accepted between Tues., Sept. 4 and Wed., Oct. 31, 2007 (2Ls - DC office) and Mon., Dec. 3, 2007 (2Ls - regional offices) and Mon., Dec. 3 to Mon. Feb. 4, 2008 (1Ls). Headquarters, regional, and district offices screen applications, contact selected candidates for telephonic interviews, and extend offers based on individual office preferences.

I am not sure I would wait for grades. Over 1,000 people apply and I think they said to apply early. If you have a decend UG record I would apply now and forward grades if possible.

When will you get your grades? I got my first grade on 12/21 and my last grade during the second week of January

I think the pay works out to $8,500 for the summer. The SEC is the most competitive and arguably the most prestigious of all government internship that you can get as a 1L. If you are intersted in going into corporate law (securities, compliance, registration, etc.) I think this would be a good move.

See if your school subscribes to:

Government Honors & Internship Handbook 2007-2008:

http://www.law.arizona.edu/career/honorshandbook.cfm

Produced annually by the University of Arizona School of Law, this is the most comprehensive directory of federal government opportunities for law students and law graduates, containing descriptions of the agencies, their hiring programs, and application processes.

I am sure GW subscribes

$8,500 really isn't too bad.

Do you know if it's just HYSCCN people that get accepted or pretty much anyone has a shot?

I don't really know of anyone who has been accepted. My guess is that HYSCCN folks would have a definite edge. As I recall, the application asked if I had won any type of scholarship and specifically asked if I had won a Rhodes, Marshall, etc. They also asked if I had published work.

I think(hope) that anyone has a shot. The NY and D.C. offices are hellishly difficult to get. You might have luck with one of the field offices though.

It is not just T6 people who get it. I know two people at 51-100 schools that have done it in the last three years. I don't have any idea what the actual numbers are, but I'm pretty sure I remember one of them saying that there was a pretty wide mix of schools represented. This would fit w/ what I know about DOJ hiring in general - school is not as big a factor as firms.

unfortunately, they have enough tier-4 applicants as it is (between Catholic, American, GMU, and GWU, they have their hands full).

not true. you can get paid at many of these agencies. much better than small law but not as good as biglaw. good shit for a 1L though.

but yes, you won't get an offer from a tier-4 unless you take a regional office with no local law schools.
