southern california

30-45 minutes in traffic a day, so prefer something that's nicer.

looking for something used, up to 10 years old, with under 75k miles. I expect to sell around 100-115k miles, so don't need to worry too much about reliability beyond that.

Need something that has room (I'm tall), has some acceleration/torque/hp, and preferably something on the newer side (3-5 years old) so I can have modern electronics.

CPO Cadillac ATS 2.0. easy to pick up a 3 year old model with less than 40K miles for under $20K. 6 year CPO warranty should give you another 3 years of warranty.

Rides like a E46 bmw and solidly built. easy to work on yourself if you DIY.

compared to a 3 series or A4, a good deal easier. just for example, a BMW battery runs $500+ because of the need for dealer labor to "register" the battery. nonsense like that.

New or used? If new either the Civic LX or the Mazda3 Sport. Everything else under 20k is not worth owning. Civic has a more fuel efficient engine. The Mazda drives slightly better but burns 10% more fuel. The Mazda has the nicer interior by far. The Honda holds its resale better. I strongly stress that no other cars under 20k are worth looking at. Avoid the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

those econocars are gutless and have terrible NVH for long commutes. plus, they are surprisingly pricey, given what you get.

he's better picking up a much nicer 3 year old CPO.

This hasn't been true for some time. The Civic is now larger than a late 90s Accord and very well insulated. The Mazda 2017 and now the 2018 has added over 100 pounds of sound proofing material over the 2016 and older. They are both quiet cars now. The Mazda is sportier so sits on a tighter suspension but the TTT Sport has the 16 inch tires so it's not a harsh ride at all. Move up the 18 inch tires and you get a much harsher ride but people who do this know what they are getting. With larger tires you feel every bump way more.

a decently equipped civic now runs over $20K. for that money i'd pickup a gently used CPO sedan like a ATS/CTS, or A4 (assuming you want to DIY maintenance)

edit: just priced a new Civic and the cheapest model w/ leather costs $25K. fuck that.

Too many ex-Uber and hurricane flooded cars on the market. I wouldn't do used in this market. Nobody pays sticker for the Civic anyway. The $24k mid level trim is going to run you $21500 off the lot if you're not an idiot. The Mazda3 Sport is like $18900 sticker but I got Tindersloots for $17500 and free mats and shit and then I decided fuck it and just leased it instead.

the shear amount of hurricane flooded cars on the market is a concern. you do need to do your due diligence to avoid any car that was ever near Houston. the dealer should be able to give you the service history and locale service was done. (don't trust carfax)

god no. only way to buy a bimmer is CPO w/ at least 3 years of warranty remaining. even then, if you are on a budget, at a minimum you need to be able to do all maintenance yourself, fluid changes, oil, brakes, filters, etc. use the savings you get from DIY maintenance for costly repairs that may not be covered by the CPO warranty (bimmer CPO warranty excludes a lot of items)

Chick car and one of the worst in the entire compact class. Even a Chevy Cruze makes more sense. Though the Jetta can be had new in base trim for like $15k because nobody wants them. At $15k it almost makes sense.

The YouTube review basically say it's too front heavy and badly tuned so it corners like a dog while boasting impressive power. So basicslly like all American cars -- good on paper but a body-frame marriage and gearing made in hell (and a heavy clutch) because they couldn't be bothered to build 200 prototypes like the aspie perfectionist Japs who don't stop until everything is perfect.
