If you're a bit older than most of the ugrads, it'll be even more insufferable (unless you're ok putting up with them). It's a typical college town without a strong "partying" culture. There's really nothing good to do within a reasonable driving distance, unless for some unfathomable reason you really love KC.
I don't know anything about how intelligent the people are, but I can't imagine you'll be blown away by anyone there, regardless of the program. |

The campus was prettier than I expected. It's somewhat old as far as public universities go, and you can feel it- there's a lot of really old, gothic architecture on campus and quite a few school traditions. A weird thing about the school is that it's on one of the few hilly pieces of land in Kansas.
I agree that the ugrads usually aren't super impressive, but they're really spirited (due to basketball, i think), which makes the campus fun. I don't really know anything about Lawrence. |

double LOL at thinking you'll for sure be able to backdoor into harvard or rockefeller with the big dogs just because some magazine rates your obscure discipline 8th best in the nation based on the presence of like one or two faculty members who have actually published on the subject - the quality dropoff in research from the top 3-4 schools in all those fields is unbelievable and you won't score extra points for KU's 'ranking.' so make sure you REALLY like the faculty members you're interested in and they're willing to really pull strings for you, otherwise yer fucked.
