Biden Drains Entire Northeast Gasoline Reserve In Bid To Lower Gas Prices As He Trails Trump By Double Digits

Tyler Durden's Photo

BY TYLER DURDEN

TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2024 - 01:45 PM

Back in March, when reading the mammoth, 1050-page bill that was meant to avert government shutdown, but was yet another pork filled free-for-all bonanza authorizing $1.7 trillion in in discretionary spending, we stumbled upon something that was truly shocking: after Biden singlehandedly drained half of the US strategic petroleum reserve to avoid obliteration for Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections, Congress has snuck in a provision that would sell off and shutter the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve, a move that while perhaps keeps gas prices lower for a day or two, would also leave the entire continental northeast defenseless to any true environmental catastrophe or shock. We were so shocked by the inclusion of this particular text, we wondered if it hadn't been put there solely for the benefit of America's enemies...

... because surely nobody in their right mind, not even the illegitimate senile occupant of the White House, would ever pursue such short-term gains at the expense of potentially disastrous long-term consequences to the entire nation.

We were wrong: earlier today, just two months after the bill was signed by Biden into law, the panicking administration announced that it would sell the nearly 1 million barrels of gasoline in the US managed stockpile in northeastern states, the Department of Energy said, effectively closing the reserve.

What is the point of keeping oil in the ground doing nothing when desperate brown and black people are starving in order to have enough money to buy gas? Is this what you want, Trumpkin?

No, when?

I remember cons being maf that he shut down all USA energy production in the midst of record high gas prices while simultaneously sending billions of dollars to TT's torturers

When was this? Even Bush 43 got this right. It's a strategic reserve, not to change gas prices. That being said, this appears to be more Congress's fault if the language in the bill is mandatory.

Biden is trying to keep gas prices low through the 4th of July. For political reasons, obviously.

Here's what Biden has done to the reserve:

https://assets.zerohedge.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/SPR%20ursula%20and%20macron_0.jpg?itok=D2y9BDXa

Dems blocked Trump from stocking up on the reserve when prices were very low (due to Trump's pro-energy policies).

To get a bit more perspective of what Biden has been up to, read this article:

Americans use about 375 million gallons of gasoline per day.

Biden releasing one million gallons is about 0.2% of daily consumption.

weird, that number represents a drop overall:

Gasoline consumption in the US, in terms of product supplied to gas stations, rose by 1.5% in 2023, to 376 million gallons per day. This was down by 3.9% from 2019 and back where it had first been 20 years ago, in 2003, with two big troughs in between.

The SPR still has about 350 million barrels.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, the Biden Administration made the largest withdrawal in SPR history in an effort to curb the oil price spikes that happened in the wake of the invasion. Between Biden’s inauguration in 2021 and mid-2023, 291 million barrels were sold from the SPR. That 46% reduction took SPR volumes to a level last seen in 1983.

Since hitting a low level of 347 million barrels in June 2023, the Biden Administration has returned about 14 million barrels of the 291 million removed (4.8%).

Look, no one is saying that a giant underground lake of gasoline that mankind pumped into a cave will definitely cause a Godzilla type creature to come into being.

the gasoline reserve is not the same as the oil reserve

the oil reserve is inside underlined salt caverns because salt doesn’t dissolve in petroleum for some reason
