The problem is that most aren’t that good. They make you want to not play anymore after a few deaths. autistic Gen Xers in 1988 were unfazed because there was nothing else. There really were No Games. Or they cost $200 in 2025 dollars, granted this was before NAFTA

100% of kids who could beat Metroid or Ninja Gaiden grew up to be troon sociopaths.

Something has to be severely fucked inside your brain to beat games that hard.

I think my NES collection at its peak was like 10 Titles. Its all I did.

Now I have handheld devices with 20,000k games on them

Mismanagement and bad decisions by a few people one of whom was one of my parents.

Also a couple of catastrophe type things that probably couldn’t have been anticipated. One had to do with 9/11. Nothing that interesting.

I’ll still inherit a little bit as long as Mamdani doesn’t totally tank the MFH real estate market for a decade.

Oh come on. The original Metroid was not a difficult game. My wife beat Metroid as a kid, and she is barely a gamer. Ninja Gaiden was a bitch, but you could grind through it if you were willing to play the final level a few times. I beat it back in the day, and that was far from the hardest game I have played.

Now if you beat NES TMNT and Battletoads, on the other hand, then there is definitely something wrong with you.

Ok, replace Metroid with TMNT 1 in my post. 97% of players never got past the underwater bomb defusing stage in TMNT and you cannot change my mind about that.

TMNT 1 isn't a hard game. I beat that one. I could get to the last boss in Ninja Gaiden and get its head to fall off, but I never beat it. Also never beat Tyson but did manage to go into the 3rd round before.

Battletoads was legit hard. I could get to the hypno orb thing but don't think I ever beat it until I got a computer and an emulator.

After all these years, I am realizing that maybe nobody other than me figured out my strategy for Ninja Gaiden. You could learn that one spin move that instantly destroyed anything, including the final boss. The problem was that the final boss had three stages. As I recall, you lost the spin move after each stage. (Or maybe its energy was depleted. I don't remember.) And if you died during any stage of the final boss, you had to replay the entire fucking final world. But when you got back to the final boss, you returned to whatever stage you died on. So you could easily beat the final boss using the spin move if you were willing to replay the final world three times. That's how I beat it without having incredible skills.

I made it to the hallway just before Shredder in TMNT, but I never actually made it to Shredder (much less beat him). I was told that it was basically impossible unless you stocked up all four turtles with 100 of those scroll weapons, which took a shit ton of grinding. I never actually owned that game, so I never had patience to do that. But I think that is another game that is beatable with sufficient levels of dedication/autism. Just getting to the final level you need to grind for scrolls wasn't exactly a picnic, though.

I definitely didn't come up with that strategy for the last boss. I would get the fire special weapon and fall just short of winning against the final form. It would take so long to get to the boss that I would never have enough time to play through the last world enough times in a row to win.

You have the general right strategy for TMNT. In the third level, there is a super easy building with the scroll and I think a quarter pizza. I would just get 99 of them with 1 turtle (usually Rafael because he wasn't that good given his weak reach) and then just not use him until you enter the technodrome. Once there, you can use him and just blast through everything and kill shredder. The only thing you had to watch out for was the instant kill ray shredder used to turn you back to just a turtle. I lost to that the first time and was super pissed.

This is all credited

it's been so hard since I've played on a CRT on original hardware, but keep in mind that means as close to ZERO input lag as exists irl, which is important af in a Title like battletoads or NG.

Metroid was very tedious though, because when you restored your game using the password, you still started with only 30 energy and would have to spend at least half an hour just building up your energy before you could go continue your exploration.
