I interviewed a guy on Tuesday and did not get a thank you note from him. I was waiting to see it before I write up his evaluation. Should I ding him at this point? Discuss.

Did the candidate not sincerely express his gratitude in person? If he did, a separate email is redundant. I've dealt with clients outside of the legal profession and have always made it a point to thank people over the phone or via email, but I've never thought it appropriate to do BOTH. This is analogous. An empty, redundant email is not likely to impress clients and it should not impress you.

Did you check with HR or some of the partners he interviewed with? Maybe he wrote a note to HR or the top partner, asking the person to thank everyone else that he interview that day, and the person just forgot to pass along the thanks. It would be a shame to ding this guy if he did that, but hey - ITE, you gotta pull out all stops and go the distance. Group thank you note is a ding in my book.

No. I'm positive those people would have forwarded it though and they have done so in the past. I'm typically OK with a group thank you notes.

You've stated my point exactly though -- if you know the circumstances of ITE and are not willing to take the extra couple of minutes, then it tells me more about your work ethic and ambitions than your resume/transcript ever could.

FWIW, none of the partners from various V10-V20s who presented at our OCI last year favored the use of thank you notes. Also, I didn't send out a single thank you note and received offers from 2/3 of the NY callbacks that I took.

IMO, it depends really on when interviewers fill out the evaluations. Once they're written, you can't really go back and edit them. I've been busy the past couple of weeks so I've been slow filling them out (each one can take 1/2 hour if you're thorough). Lately, I've gotten used to receiving thank you notes before I get to the evaluation so it really stood out that this person didn't send one. Putting all these candidates side-by-side, it makes the weeding out process a little easier (all else being equal), especially since we have so little information about the person to go on.

With that said, a lot of people do the evaluations immediately. Especially the partners because they're not as thorough -- they basically just write whether they recommend the person or not.

the conventional wisdom from career service offices is to not send individual notes after CBs. you send one thank you to the HR person and ask them to send along your thanks to the attorneys you met with.

I think the best practice is to send individual thank yous, but group thank you emails are acceptable too. I certainly wouldn't ding anyone for them. I know at least some schools do give this advice though and have received some in the past.

well maybe he sent something to hr but your shitty hr person didn't pass along the sentiments. ever consider that? recruiting coordinators are often the most incompetent people in a law firm.

It's a noble cause for peace-loving hippies, but unfortunately will not get you far in big law.

Subject: Lol @:

1) the idea that your eval matters. I write ty notes to the hiring partner and anyone I specif liked. I don't write to the pagro jr associate who took me to a crappy Asian fusion restaurant and told me he was giving me the "unvarnished truth."

2) your unmitigated commitment to the corporatespeak of your firm. You are looking for candidates who go the distance? If 16yo you knew that this is the way you talk even when out of work and anonymous, would he cry?

3) you

Thank you e-mails seem to be the norm these days. Nevertheless, sending one is a bad idea. Case in point: I was set to submit a positive review for an interviewee when I received from him a poorly written thank you e-mail. I'm sure he thought it was innocuous, but that's only because he doesn't realize he's a bad writer. DING!

sending one can be a bad idea if you are a shit writer. that doesn't mean a well-written thank you note is a bad idea

The following e-mail won't hurt you, but it won't help you either.

Dear Interviewer,

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to interview me. I truly appreciate your candid discussion of [firm] with me. [Insert conspicuously dull sentence attempting to personalize the e-mail based on our discussion.] Based on our discussion, I believe I would be a perfect fit at [firm], and am very excited about the possibility of joining [firm] in the summer of 2011.

Sincerely,

[Interviewee]

I've yet to see any thank you e-mail that improves upon that.

I've interviewed about 15 2Ls for our summer associate program at the call back stage.

Out of that 15, I received 4 email thank you notes (most of which were pretty good and dovetailed with whatever we actually talked about at the interview) and one hand written one which was also pretty good but I struggled a little to figure out which candidate sent it due to handwriting.

I just do the evaluations immediately after the interview or I will forget what I thought about the candidate, so none of these thank you notes affected my evaluations.

Are interviewers actually supposed to respond to thank you notes?
