How about if we compare on an "hour to hour" basis? That requires an assumption of an average speed for autos. We'll choose 40mph. This leads to the following numbers:

GA: 11.2 fatal accidents and 19.7 fatalities per million hours

driving: .528 fatal accidents and .588 fatalities per million hours

On this basis, flying has 21 times the number of fatal accidents and 33.5 times the number of fatalities per hour of operation.

first, 40 mph is too high by far for average speed of cars, thus grossly underestimating the auto fatality rate..

second, the page establishes commercial flying as much safer than driving.

third, the page doesn't take into account the number of passengers which skews the statistic.

Uncle has this job, sounds like a genuinely dreadful existence, but I guess if you're one of those guys who just loves the idea of flying, it might be a way to go. He spent several years flying along beaches pulling signs behind him, then worked up to co-pilot doing shitty regional routes, then got laid off, last I heard he was doing private jets, which pays worse but has amazing food.

This sounds pretty sweet. Set up shop in Ft Walton or Myrtle Beach, fly around a little bit, maybe take some beach bunnies up in the air to impress them, drink some High Life in the evenings. You probably make like $20K though

It's really dangerous to fly with those signs behind the plane though. Normally if the engine stalls you can recover pretty easily and its NBD. If you have one of those signs behind you however, you are pretty fucked.

The above poaster who said this was credited a few decades ago nailed it. Friend's dad flew for a major carrier, and from what he's said, really, it's not unlike the legal profession in that a few are cruising while everyone else fights for scraps. The industry today bears little resemblence to what it was back in the day when being pilot was a big deal (a lot of them were ex-military fighter jockeys) and the stewardesses, ahem, flight attendants, were mostly hot.
