Words in articles hyperlinked to ads, porno popup ads showing on your desktop at random times, etc. But for the most part, they weren't doing anything really insidious yet, like ransomware that encrypts your files or more advanced backdoors that steal financial information. They would just turn your computer into a complete time-bomb shitshow that at any random time could inform your parents or GF or whatever that you had been looking at porn.
