$2,500 down and $2,500 when you make the law review.

Overnight me copies of your competition materials and I will write you a paper that will likely get you on the law review.

For reference, I am on law review, I have been editing assignments all year, and I have published two articles. I guarantee that I can write a better paper than you.

Given that law review will likely come as close to guaranteeing you a job as you can get, this is a small investment.

Everything will be anonymous, you can do your own cover pages and whatnot. BTW, most law reviews are anonymously graded anyways, so you will have a number instead of your name. I will have you send the package to my PO Box in DC with a money order for $2,500 inside.

Additionally, you can use my submission to glean ideas from for the paper you are writing, like writing onto the law review with an experiences partner.

I can only do one law review competition in any given period of time so hurry up, spaces are filling fast!

This is actually a good answer. But you could use some IP blocking software. It would seem you have an incentive to do so.

Otherwise, you could also create a throwaway moniker and post this from your laptop at Burger King or McDonalds (using free wifi).

You'd need to escrow both identities with a 3rd party who is trustworthy and understands the anonymity aspect but has no obligation to the bar. I'm thinking a P.I. or some other nonpracticing lawyer. And make sure the person has liability insurance that would cover you and the law school person in case the guy ever gives up your names... like 200k of business insurance or something.

Because, otherwise, what's to stop you doing what someone describes below (mailing the money order and essay to someone's dean)?

I mean, both of you are discoverable as it is. Having a trusted, BUSINESS-interested 3rd party (not personally interested and having no professional duty to report either of you) seems reasonable. Put it in writing from each side of the deal and let the 3rd party hold that info. The indisputable fact that a competent 3rd party knows who's who will ensure neither side tries to fuck the other over.

I don't think this would cost much, either. Perhaps $100 but probably less. Hell, if you need that person, I will do it for $100 and I'll carry the insurance. I think it would need to be $200k, because if either side tried to destroy the other, they should get NO compensation... but the side unfairly outed should be reimbursed for the costs of their now worthless law degree/professional license.

he can fuk someone without signing anything. just send a copy of what he wrote with an anonymous letter saying how it was done. the P.O. box he would be an issue for him, b/c u need a street address to get one. but he could solve this by doing the whole thing electronically. just find any random open wireless net anywhere and set up a tempinbox.com account or something to receive scanned copies of materials and to send completed papers back.

edit: duh. forgot about the money tho ...

well, anyway. assuming he can keep his identity secret somehow, he doesn't have to reveal it in order to out his customers.

You're missing the point. In my arrangement, the whole POINT is for some 3rd party to absolutely know the ID of both people. By verifying it from their IDs, from some basic research, etc.

This competent 3rd party (probably a PI or some nonpracticing attorney) stands in the middle of the transaction for the sole purpose of having both identities and making it mutually destructive for either party to go after the other. If they have a beef with each other, they appoint the middleman to solve the problem.

This can probably be done in half an hour for $100 or something. Not a huge cost when you're talking $5000 total bill. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

sure, i get it. but only the OP is going to have first hand dealings and "trust" with this intermediary. how do customers know that the intermediary even knows who the OP is, or will carry through on the mutually assured destruction?

OP could just call some random douchebag on the phone and offer him cash to handle a few packages, nothing illegal involved, no face to face meeting, nothing. he can even open the packages if he wants to make sure he's not passing drugs or something. the intermediary has no liability and doesn't need to know anything.

in the end, ur still left with OP having the information edge -- he knows what skool u attend, and u know nothing about him.

Are you missing my point on purpose?

The 3rd party is a competent PI or nonpracticing lawyer who has a business of some sort doing this kind of stuff. Holding funds in escrow, holding information confidential. And he carries business insurance. And he hands a signed contract to each side, saying he has information about their transaction and will hold it forever, in a safe place, and will maintain it forever or until both parties are deceased, or whatever.

Before signing this and accepting the identity of both parties, the intermediary would have to verify both identities. They'd do the same thing for this transaction they do for all transactions they handle. Get absolute proof of identity, however it is they do that.

Both sides could see if the intermediary is legit or not, because they can look him up, do research, and treat it like a normal business transaction.

This would be a normal transaction for them. This stuff is not that novel at all. You really don't understand that?

If the student was ever outed, they would KNOW that the only person who knew about it was the intermediary and the OP who wrote their LR essay. They'd go to the intermediary and seek the ID of the OP and they would go about either obtaining the insurance proceeds and/or obtaining the OP's identity so they can sue him personally.

I guess there is always a .001% chance that the OP is some evil criminal genius hellbent on ruining law students. And that he'd be both a brilliant mastermind and a smooth operator that he could get the money, then turn on the student, and manage not to fuck up his life.

I doubt this. Highly doubtful. The lynchpin of this entire arrangement is--BOTH SIDES are on notice that they are known. BOTH SIDES have a huge incentive to move on with their lives and not consider outing the other side. There is an element of mutual destruction at work... makes it highly illogical for either side to dime on the other.

d00d, u cannot sue anyone for revealing the *true fact* that u lied and cheated in an academic competition that made ur entire career possible, so nobody's "insurance" is going to pay u a dime. also, "reputable" escrow agents like attorneys and PIs are not in the business of helping u with anonymous transactions so u can better manage a scheme for ppl to cheat in graduate school.

sure, ppl have agents who represent them in deals without revealing who they are, but the agents know who the client is, and they understand the transaction that is taking place. nobody "reputable" is just going to pass packages for u without having some idea what is going on. once u explain why u need all the cloak and dagger shit for a $5,000 deal that you're paying them some petty fee to facilitate, they're just going to laugh in ur face and tell u to gtfo.

You can agree to liquidated damages in advance.

You can put these provisions in a contract. And then, if they out you and won't pay up, you sue for breach of contract... and yes, that would be a valid, legal contract.

retake Ks. and common sense. u have to show that liquidated damages are roughly equal to legitimate anticipated actual damages from a breach at the time the K is formed. u will not suffer, and therefore cannot sue for, legitimate legal damages, when all that happens is that u lose a professional license due to ur own lying and cheating. also, NOBODY is going to do a $100 job that exposes them to some non-trivial level of financial risk years down the road, even if this would be a "valid, legal contract."

Additionally, I don't care about your identity. I have as much to lose as you. I'm sure someone writing law reviews for people would have a tough time passing the bar and not getting suspended from law school.

And any effort to collect might end up fucking you over (out of a career).

I think you have a good idea... and it's not ILLEGAL, right? Only unethical? So you're not commiting crimes via the mails (Federal offense) you're just running a business.

Yep, not illegal so there's no mail fraud involved.

It's a trust issue, someone trusts me with $2,500 not knowing my identity, I could just walk away with the money. I'm very good at this though, and would want the additional money. If I did run off with the money, it would become mail fraud, and I don't want any of that noise.

At the very least, I would likely know what school the law review materials came from. If not, some posting on here or LSD with the prompts would quickly clue me into what school the person goes to. From there, it's a matter of mailing the LR board of that school with the submission I wrote and an explanation of what occurred. I could stay anonymous and have the school's LR board find the person for me by comparing submissions (or re-doing the competition, if it came to that) and fucking them over without me ever having to get involved.

Oh, I'm in LS. Hard to verify though without revealing my identity, but I suppose a battery of questions regarding 1L/2L classes and the structures of law reviews would help authenticate.

as u said, ur safe b/c the other end has no idea who ur. what happens a few years from now when u rack up $250k in gambling debts and don't want to get ur legs broke, or ur moms needs a new liver or something?

i'm sure u would never do this, but my point is just that for ur customers there is nothing to stop it. as u pointed out, u will know what skool they attend. and u already noted that u can guarantee payment using just this threat.

this is also a lifetime liability, since it can fuck someone out of their professional license and entire career at any moment.

Do you think it would affect someone once they are practicing and have passed the bar? I do remember some PR cases about passing the bar based on fraud and unethical behavior...

pretty sure any skool's honor code will cover this, and likely whatever thing u sign for the competition swearing it is ur own work. this seems like exactly the sort of academic dishonesty that would get you C&F pwned. it's no diff from cheating on exams (maybe worse even).

I actually agree with this. But lets say you've been practicing 10 yrs at that point... you think you'd lose your license forever? I doubt it. You'd probably be suspended for a while, though.

At any rate, under my arrangement, the 3rd party who escrows the ID information and written statements from each party would have to carry insurance... if he fucked up and outed anyone, he'd have to pay them off (out of insurance, I guess).

I'm seeing this as more of a problem for the receipient of the paper, though. For them, its a major problem that will never go away... it's lifelong.

You'd need to bring in a 3rd party to escrow your identity... unless you are targetting people who are desparate to make LR. In which case, you're opening up yourself to problems, because they may have marginal grades or be at marginal schools and then not make LR no matter what you submit... triggering possible problems for you with them being pissed off.

Also, those kind of people probably won't think as much before going after your identity.

That is worth at least 20K for any T2 or non-T14 T1 student.

I agree with this. His best target would actually be students at schools ranked 21-75. They have a chance at BIGLAW, but LR is much more important for them than for students at t14 or the schools just outside t14.

Students below approx t75 won't value it as much bc they could be LR and still not get biglaw.

Most of the people who'd be upper-half at t2 schools are not paying full ticket price. Most on LR/in running for LR are probably not paying more than 50% tuition. Merit money is a big reason the top people are there. So to me the bigger point is, they have made it to the upper part of the class and want biglaw and they know that they're a lock with LR but its very iffy without. This is different than if they were at a t20, where they could get biglaw with top 40% and a secondary journal or something...

This is all true, but the people who pay $20k are not the types of people with which I would want to deal. These are the most desperate people who would be the most vindictive if they didn't get on LR somehow, either by grades or whatever. On top of that, more guarantees would needed from me, like my school email address and whatnot. This is not the kind of information that I want released.

$20k is a good deal for guaranteed LR at some schools for some people, but I am not guaranteeing LR.

Okay, all these problems make me realize I would need to use an escrow.

What about this: Meet, in person only, and give me the LR materials with, say, $1,500. One week later (or however long the deadline for LR is), I meet back in the same place to exchange the completed note for another $1,500.

That way you're paying $3,000 (one week's biglaw pay) for a great shot at LR, almost guaranteed. That way I don't need to worry about trying to figure out if you made LR in the future or anything.

There are no names involved whatsoever, just two quick meetings.

ok, let's say u have a friend and i have a friend, neither of them lawyers or law students. i give my friend the comp. mat'ls and the cash, and he meets ur friend. a week later they meet again for the swap of the paper and the 2nd payment. are friends are not committing any crime, so they have no exposure here.

other than knowing what skool i attend, u have no idea who i am, and more important no way to contact me. hence it's pretty unpossible for u to make any future demand, without outing me in the process of figuring out who i am (thus destroying my incentive to pay u).

so, just arrange the meet with both sides using throwaway email accounts that u only access from random public open wireless networks. if anyone tries to set u up by making a bogus deal with u and posting video of it on youtube, all they're going to see is somebody passing shit to ur pal, who of course could care less.

now the only problem is, customers just have to take it on faith that whatever u write will be worth the $3k. i guess there might be enough ppl shitty enough at writing to figure it couldn't possibly be any worse than they could produce, and $3k is not that much money in the grand scheme of things.

of course, u could set this up with 20 ppl, pocket the $30k, and do nothing, which is a pretty sweet deal for u. u could also hand back a copy of some random law review article on a vaguely related topic for the second swap and score the whole amount. it's not like ppl dumb enough to need this service (let alone their non-law-student pals) are going to be able to figure it out at a glance, and ur sure as hell not going to hang around while they go check it against westlaw.

would i risk it? nah. seems like a pretty huge chance of paying $3k for nothing. plus you've still got the information edge on me, and i'm not certain that i've thought thru every way this whole thing could screw the pooch down the line (for instance: wut if ur just a d00d who wants to get off on outing a bunch of cheating strivers a year from now, without even making more money off it?).

there lies the rub. for $3k a pop, this seems not even remotely worth u risking ur license over, especially since u can only do a couple of them a year. if u kick it to the level where real money is on the table, then u either have so many people in the mix that somebody, sooner or later is going to run their mouth, or someone gets pissed off enough when it doesn't work out for them that they decide to track u down and screw u.

Yeah, but I mean as a full time thing with Kaplan or something as a backer. Hire people with demonstrated writing ability and delegate the various inputs you receive to them. Pay the workers something like $750 for a week's work.

well, if ur talking profile like that, then it's hard to believe a legit company is going to back u. i guess u could spin it as a service that just writes "model answers" for each law review competition, and ur not responsible for how ppl use them, if at all, in their own work. u could just sell them openly then.

but by definition, at any volume that would make a larger operation profitable, u will defeat ur own success. once more than one person at each school turns in ur answer or their own cobbled up shit based on it, they all get disqualified. it really only works if u have just one customer per school, so it's a very low volume and highly seasonal source of revenue -- not enough even to justify setting it up for most companies, probably.

that's even assuming u can get hold of the comp. mat'ls legitimately, which is simple enough for lr boards to prevent by just adding a non-disclosure agreement to their little honor pledge or whatever that u sign in order to enter the comps (i'd be stunned if this is not already in all of them). with a disclaimer like that, u won't get anyone to back u in selling answers when u have no legit access to the questions.

yeah, with an inside track to the right social circle, u can probably clean up doing this sort of stuff one on one with ppl willing to pay real money for it. $20k is pocket change for them, and if it's an "investment" in their kids' future, then it's a bargain, right? the trick is setting up the needed level of trust in the right circles, which usually means tight family or bidness ties, or owing ur clients for similar unsavory favors. ppl only do bidness with ppl they trust, and double so for sketchy shit like this.

Parents drop $20k without thinking about it on SAT or LSAT tutors. If it is the difference between Fordham and Columbia - it is probably worth it (would you pay and extra 20k in tuition to go to CLS?).

I'd have no doubt they'd do the same for law review.

shitty deal. at $400/hr or so, you really think you can do this assignment in less than 25-30 hours?

if you're in ls and on lr and have published articles you're in a good position to write on at X's journal. but the people who really know what's needed, the extra analysis or realpolitik of the law from those in the trenches would be too expensive (like $50K at least) to pay to make LR when it won't guarantee a future job.
