This reminds me a number of years ago when my dad decided to ask me if I was angry at him because he was part Jewish (note: this guy never did anything Jewish in his life and his mother was a virulent antisemite). Totally baffled me. Apparently it was a plot point in some Russian drama he was watching which is what prompted it. While theoretically some people might think like this it seems like mentally ill behavior to me.

I have no choice, being 100% Jewish and having a hook nose. My kids though may never identify as Jewish since we aren't religious and they have a totally different ethnicity to which they belong equally.

i don't think bloodacre is ashamed. if he was he wouldn't be so open about his jewish heritage on an anonymous message bort. he's saying that for many jews it can be disadvantageous, and those won't identify as jews.

when blacks were persecuted white-passing blacks would hide their black heritage. now that being black is an advantage you've got dolezals.

when gays were persecuted most were closeted. now that it's an advantage tons of heteros claim to be gay or bi.

i don't think most in those groups were ashamed of their heritage. they just didn't put it on display when it would cause more harm than good. i doubt bloodacre's kids will be ashamed of their jewish heritage, but if jews are disfavored of course they will be more likely to hide their heritage. this is what happens when any group is disfavored by society.

if suddenly there was anti-irish protestant sentiment because The Troubles reignited i wouldn't feel they need to defend my heritage. i have no association with ireland or any dog in that fight. and i'd avoid negative association with it because it has nothing to do with me. not because i'm ashamed of my heritage, but because i don't want to be associated with something i'm not apart of or be made to defend against it.

also it's a matter of degree and how much they "are" that thing. a secular jew with no ties to judiasm might actually feel they arent that thing (e.g. rsf, taking him at his word). and hiding could be anything from not broadcasting it to actively denying it.

in my irish example, im proud enough that I would never affirmatively deny my heritage. but im not flying the Irish flag either.
