Why do so many law students want to work in D.C.?

You're correct that DC girls suck compared to NY, but you're forgetting law school dudes are mostly ugly, awkward queers anyway and there's plenty of chicks here on their level so it's perfect. And if you're a good looking dude, this place is by no means crawling with a high quantity of good looking chicks, but if you go out a couple of times a week I guarantee you will find at least 1-2 hot chicks to hit on. Just like you "only need 1 offer", you only need 1 hot chick to make the city worthwhile. |

It certainly lacks the culture of NYC, and I think very few people would argue otherwise. I've never understood the nightlife argument. I would agree that the club scene and the restaurants are much better in New York, but the New York nightlife can be such overkill that there really is no sacrifice when making the switch to DC. Who cares if you have 100 bars within a five minute walk if you will never set foot in 99% of them. If you have a network of friends or take the time to make friends, Washington, DC can actually be a lot more fun, because you end up seeing the people you know much, much more often. The biggest problem with NYC for most people is that it has a shelf-life of maybe a few years. It is a great place to live for a couple years, but once you realize that you will never be a billionaire living on 5th ave. (especially as a lawyer) you will start to fully understand the significant sacrifices you have to make to live there. Buying a home, for example, will be the most humbling experience of your life. Washington, DC, on the other hand, while still expensive, can provide long term opportunities (such as buying a reasonably nice home within a reasonable commute to work) that New York cannot. The women argument is just ridiculous. There are certainly more supermodel types and better-dressed women in New York, but other than that, there will be droves of women out of just about any man's league in every major city in the U.S. DC is really not that different than most major cities with regards to these issues, so the real decision is just NYC vs. all other east coast cities, with DC being the most viable option for legal grads. You take home much more of your paycheck than if you live in NYC, and work fewer hours along the way, with a higher chance of making partner than in NYC.
I really like NYC and think it's a better city than DC, but that doesn't mean I think it's worth the sacrifices to be a young lawyer there. |
