Here's what BOTH shitlibs and Christcucks need to take into account:
1. This story satisfies the criterion of multiple attestation. It is told in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Not many other "facts" about Jesus meet that criterion. Let's assume the gospels originated as oral traditions. When you have three separate records of an oral tradition, all of which include the same story, that implies that illiterate people telling the story of Jesus were telling you about Jesus and the rich young ruler.*
2. It is consistent with archaeology and history and the laws of physics as we know them. There are no miracles happening here. Two men are just having a conversation. Shitlibs can't play that card.
3. This is the big one: it satisfies the criterion of embarrassment. Every leader of every major christian domination will tell you "DO NOT TAKE THIS LITERALLY." They all have some song and dance about how it's allegory. If Jesus literally meant what he says to the rich young ruler*, like if he means it LITERALLY, then 99.999% of Christians are fucked, and the ones who aren't fucked are in mental institutions or living in homeless camps.
Shitlibs, your question is: why can't this be invoked as evidence that Jesus actually existed?
Christcucks, your question: why shouldn't Jesus be taken literally here?
*yes I said "ruler" because I'm told the Greek word used to introduce him implies that he was expected to inherit some title of minor nobility in the Roman empire, and I think that's important in light of #3.

Why Jesus' Words Upset Us
But Jesus' words don't just upset the rich young ruler. They also upset us. As a pastor I have heard many times the response to this passage: "That doesn't mean everyone should sell what they have, does it? If everyone did that it would result in chaos."
Obviously. But why are we even worried with the question? Do we, too, feel possessive of what we have? Do we fear that Jesus may require us to do something that would cost us too much? What are we afraid of? And why do we fear?
We fear because we sense that we are not fully surrendered, that's why. Jesus' words to the rich young ruler are quite consistent with what he has been saying to his disciples throughout his journeys:
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters -- yes, even his own life -- he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26-27).
"In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:33)
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it" (Matthew 13:44-46).
"For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it" (Luke 9:24).
"Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it" (Luke 17:33)
Then Come, Follow Me (Luke 18:22b)
The story of the rich young ruler exposes a raw nerve in us that causes a reaction. But disposing of wealth was not all that Jesus asked the man to do.
"When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" (18:22)
He concludes with two commands. "Come" is Greek deuro, an adverb functioning as an interjection, "here, (come) here, come!"784 The word "follow" is the characteristic word of discipleship, Greek akoloutheō, "follow," figuratively, "to follow someone as a disciple, be a disciple, follow."785
However, I don't think that the following Jesus invites this man to do is just figurative. Jesus looked at this man and loved him (Mark 10:21). I think he is inviting the rich young man to join him on his journeys, to become one of the disciples who enjoys the immense and unspeakable privilege of spending time with Jesus and learning from him on a day-by-day basis. What a wonderful invitation!
But the invitation implicit to us is no less wonderful. We, too, are invited to come to Jesus, and then to follow him on a spiritual life journey. To enjoy his company, his presence. To be taught along the way by his Word and Spirit. To become part of his great extended family, the Body of Christ throughout the world. And to be filled with hope in the closing days of our journey as we know his promises and feel his comfort with us.
"Come, follow me," is the invitation Jesus extends to you and me.

The most parsimonious explanation for all of this is that Jesus thought the Kingdom of God would occur in his lifetime. He was not telling the man he'd have to be poor for very long.
Really, the most parsimonious explanation is that Jesus was an apocalyptic cult leader. Or at least that's what he'd be called today. These people have ALWAYS existed in Jewish and Christian tradition. Heavens Gate, all that shit. There are always people who say they ran the math through scripture, and they did some numerology, and it's going to happen on this date. Then the date comes and nothing happens. Then they say "oh I got the math wrong I was off by 20 years." There are people alive today who peddle this scam to sell books for a living.
In this case, the dood fuckin died. The Kingdom of God didn't come. So there was an immediate need to transform the story into something allegorical. There was no other way to keep the faith going after the dude was literally crucified. You couldn't make about Him being around in earthly form anymore, so you couldn't tell people His new Kingdom was imminent. It was really about his disciples and whether they would continue to have any stature, or whether people would say they were rubes who got scammed by Jesus.

>Christcucks, your question: why shouldn't Jesus be taken literally here?
He should be taken literally. And in the last sentence of the story he says that God is what's needed to enter heaven. I.e., God is the sine qua non of salvation. He is NOT saying that wealth-having damns you.
Taking him as saying "if you got money you can't go to Heaven" would require that you deny his claim about God at the end.
The only literal way to take what he's saying is to understand that the comments about eye of a needle taken literally would be you taking them HYPER-literally like a fuckin aspie.
Not to mention there's scholarship about the camel in the eye of a needle being a shit translation. It should be "rope through eye of needle" but in Aramaic camel and rope are homophonic AND homonymous, and Koine Greek they're /almost/ homophones.

It sounds like cope to retards
>[26] . . . "Then who can be saved?” [27] Looking at them, Jesus *said, “With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
To assert it's impossible for rich people to enter heaven is to call Jesus a liar for what he says a couple verses later. This is how you know he was bustin balls, not constructing an analytical philosophy argument.

When St. Francis heard these words, he felt like Jesus was speaking directly to him. The word of God was living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing and judging the heart of Francis; and he did not want to be like the young man who went away grieving. Francis felt deeply that the best way to bring God’s kin-dom on earth was to do his part in dismantling systems of oppression and inequality by relinquishing everything he had to the point of stripping naked in Assisi’s town center. He knew that, before God’s presence, no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. And he embraced his most beautiful bride whom he called “Holy Poverty.” For Francis, who is the most beloved and Christ-like saint of the last thousand years (at least), poverty and even sickness were not a sign of God’s curse, but God’s blessing.
The last words of St. Francis were: “I have done what was mine to do. May Christ teach you what you are to do.” May we allow Christ to teach us what we are to do through the Word of God this morning. May the Word of God be alive and active for you, sharper than any two-edged sword. May it pierce us in our hearts and challenge us with our wallets so that we don’t walk away grieving like the rich, young ruler, but rather rejoicing like St. Francis, who was known for singing hymns and songs of praise in the woods, giving thanks for his great high priest who sympathized with his weakness, who helped him in his time of need, and who made that which felt impossible possible. Amen.

Jesus told this man to give away everything in no uncertain terms.
He also makes it clear repeatedly that money is not necessary if you are in his crew. He has wine. He has food. He has a big feast for passover in a foreign town. You don't need money to get into the club, you need to show loyalty by giving up your money.
Remember too that this same man has a problem with people exchanging their money at the temple gate. They never really tell you why that would piss him off. Churches just gloss right over this. Many people conflate money changing with money lending, but that's not at all what was going on.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
implausible that centurion was destitute. centurion = gentile (assumption). statement that gentiles (“east and west”) will enter the kingdom. implication: centurion/gentile causing jesus’ pronouncement has faith sufficient for admission. result: no requirement to renounce all material possessions in all cases, but be wary of things of the world

BUT SEE
second source relating same interaction: matthew 8:5-13 (source 1 is luke)
criterion of embarrassment: jesus’ words condemning his/the authors’ own people and commending gentiles (conflicting with jewish view of unworthiness of gentiles)
11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. 12 But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
