Winter in the Midwest is not so bad until March-early April. Over Dec-Feb, it's 20-25 and sunny... which I prefer over 38 and rainy on the East Coast. In early spring, though, when the rest of the country is in the 70s and we're in the 40s, I'm not as much a fan, because at this point I'm tired of winter. However, I'll take 10.5 months of nice with noticable seasonal variation.

Ok. I believe that.

I think a lot of the reason why the winter of 2005 was considered to be mild is that it was relatively short. By February it was into the 30s-50s, and by April it was T-shirt weather. (Though we did get that freakish May snowstorm.) That doesn't usually happen with the MN winter. It seems that the bulk of winter happened in Dec-Jan.

More May snowstorms? :)

This should be a mild winter in the northeast (by which I include the Midwest east of the Dakotas) because of the active hurricane season. Hurricanes carry a lot of tropical heat into the northern latitudes.

(Actually, I take that back. I did some research and, for reasons I do not understand, hurricane seasons result in colder winters. This is counterintuitive, given the ridiculous amount of energy they dissipate.)

I don't know which neighborhoods are good and which not, but I'd guess that good homes in downtown Mpls. or St. Paul would sell for $300-400k. I could be way off, though.

St. Paul has a reputation for being more livable and is probably cheaper.

You are actually looking at north of 500k for a house in a nice, long-term living, neighborhood (close to the city, decent school district for kids, decent home and neighborhood).

But, all said, it's about half the price as the coasts and with this year's BIGLAW raises competitive with coast and Chicago BIGLAW, especially when you consider hours and COL differences.

Minneapolis is one of the nicer cities I've been in. I like SF more, but, figuring in COL I would pick Minneapolis over it to live in long-term. I also like it more than DC (same political feel, less COL, and DC gets annoying after awhile).

Yes, 3Ls are reporting, including everyone from a big firm last summer, everyone with a clerkship, and the majority of people with work lined up already. Why would I lie about something and make my school look bad?

I am not saying its a lie, I am just pointing out the ridiculousness of your belief that students tell CSO when they get offers or accept. I am sure some do. I am sure towards the end of the year most fill out the survey, but not in October. Do you have a job?

Nope, and I'm now in the first quartile. Of course, it's hard to find work when 3L OCI has 18 employers most of whom are boring IP firms. And, yes, I'm doing my own legwork. At least my boyfriend has a job, so I don't starve.

Well, you are probably bitter about it, and that's why you overlook the reality that many students do not report offers and acceptances.

While bitter, I've also spoken with the CSO and they explained that it's "normal" this time of year and based on its numbers 1/2 are still looking.

Account for the numbers of students that don't report, I doubt I will - I hate the CSO, and you will have much less than 1/2.

Then explain why people in the first/second quartile aren't getting work, while your "friends" in the bottom 1/2 are getting firm jobs? Don't pull the bad interviewing argument, because that clearly never stopped me from getting firm jobs 1L and 2L summer.

"because that clearly never stopped me from getting firm jobs 1L and 2L summer"

How do you have firm jobs over both summers and not have a job going forward? You couldn't convince one of these employers to keep you, even if they were only temp summers jobs? Most of the 3Ls I know are in the 2nd quartile, I only know 3 in the first. They all have jobs. The few I know in the 3rd quartile have jobs, but with much smaller firms. I do know a dude in the bottom that cannot find work. But its obvious why.

I guess I don't have the proper begging skills.

Keep in mind that there are 65 people in each quartile, so it's not like you know the whole story with the 3L class.

You only need to produce quality work and show some initiative and they will have a financial incentive to keep you.

Angry Mitchell grads? Sick. No, I worked in a very small office, but 2/3 were UMN grads.
