I watched the successful Russian crime action film Brother (1997) tonight after it was recommended as a dissident film. The film captured a transitory era after perestroika where Russia was being absorbed into the global capitalist system with all that entailed, the changes of values, the nihilism, the capitalism, and the decline of family. The main character, played adroitly by Sergei Sergeyevich Bodrov (who died strangely in the 2002 Kolka–Karmadon rock ice slide which killed 120+ people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolka%E2%80%93Karmadon_rock_ice_slide) did a very good job in the role, even if he was serving as a blank slate. The film was well acted, well directed, with strong action and a good soundtrack - just a solid film, and it held my attention throughout. Other themes include the role of women in society (loyalty vs. disloyalty, strength versus weakness), the role of guns (difficult to acquire, homemade), ethnic division (Russians contrasted with Germans, Armenians, Tartars, Chechens, a throwaway line about Jews).

I wouldn’t call it a dissident film, although Bodrov’s character tries and fails to maintain his family ties to his brother which are dissolving due to the above influences, but I liked it and recommend it.

brat was influenced in tone and mood by a soviet-era film called "the red snowball tree." that one is about a released convict who tries to start over in a small siberian town, but is caught up in the consequences of his past.
