medieval best man - skilled swordsman or warrior among the groom's friends, was tasked with ensuring the bride's safe delivery to the wedding and protecting the couple from potential threats, such as rival suitors or family disputes. this could include physically defending the groom or even assisting in a "bride capture" if the marriage was contested or involved elopement. beyond security, the best man also acted as a witness to the marriage, helped organize the ceremony, and ensured the groom's responsibilities were met, such as delivering the bride's dowry or securing the wedding location.
today's "best man" - creates mayhem and regrets on some BS bachelor party, makes a shitty speech, spills a drink on himself at reception as he rants about politics.
