I think it's still the only movie with indoor scenes lit entirely by candlelight, with no artificial lighting whatsoever. Kubrick could only do that because he got one of 4 (four) copies of the fastest lens ever made. Barry Lyndon is the only movie he ever shot with that lens, and it's the only lens he uses throughout the entire movie.
The lens was originally designed by Carl Zeiss to be used to take photos on the moon. Part of the reason people think Kubrick was involved in faking the moon landing is because no one knows how he ended up with a copy of that lens. Also, it wasn't usable in its original state. Kubrick had to modify a film camera to be able to even use it.
I have mixed feelings about it. I agree that the candlelight scenes are a neat stunt. Like the Copa scene in Goodfellas, it's good to have examples of moments when a director pulled off something incredible. My chief complaint is that the lens is too grainy in outdoor shots. I think that's because, in addition to using a fast lens, Kubrick also used fast film. So you have all these outdoor shots where there's shitloads of light, but you never get an image that looks anything like, say, Lawrence of Arabia. Look at any given frame from that movie and it looks like it was shot in 8k resolution even though it was shot on film.

Not sure there’s any other film that has the level of XO consensus on its greatness than BL.
I’ve never seen an earnest attempt (or any attempt at all come to think of it) on XO to poke holes in it, argue it’s overrated, etc.
Meanwhile I’ve certainly seen well-reasoned (even if i personally disagree) screeds against AP, NCFOM, GGR, The Wire, The Sopranos, and whatever other films/shows are enshrined in our collective autistic antisocial canon.

One of the GOAT movies.
The novel is also well worth reading -- very different tone and style.
Movie is ultimately about female flightiness (love of rakes & alphas) and what it means to be male. Also, the treachery of the eyerish.

watched last night and it is a complete 180. i dont have anything to add that hasnt already been said (cinematography, costume design, settings, score, etc are amazing). Only miss is ryan o'neal who I am never impressed with. would have been an interesting Jack nicholson role. Or time machine collin farrel back there. still o'neal is at least adequate.
Its a bummer films like this are never made anymore. we only get top cinema from scorsese, tarantino, and those guys are grandfathered in. I cant imagine anyone ever making something like Lyndon again. sad.

disagree on O’Neal
he had a much more subtle fury than Jack could ever pull off, which is necessary for a ladder climber.
can’t imagine Jack speaking German and pulling off the Dandy parts
