Has really excellent breakdowns of common pawn structures, and outlines overall objectives for both white and black in each. Incredibly helpful, one of the best chess resources I've ever read. Has a lot of information in here that I've struggled to find, and has fixed a lot of the deficiencies in my game. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I found that my tactics have gotten much better as my strategic and positional understanding has improved. I haven't played seriously in a very long time, but I started playing more online recently because I had some time to kill, and my biggest issue is still the same as it always was: figuring out how to exploit asymmetries and discern weaknesses. As I've gotten better with that, everything else has substantially improved. Tactics don't mean very much if you never know when to use them or how to find them, and while drilling them has helped me significantly in the past, I am still worse at them in games, and limited by how good my positional understanding is. If that's there, I can find tactics all day. If it's not, I'll miss obvious shit.
Being able to find common motifs in pawn structures has probably been the most significant improvement I've made since I stopped playing seriously.

great book so far. reminds me of https://www.amazon.com/Gm-Ram-Essential-Grandmaster-Chess-Knowledge/dp/0938650726 that was highly recommended to me when i was much younger and that i tried to read but lost interest in
this book seems like it's trying to accomplish the same thing but with lots of useful context and instruction, instead of just giving strategically important positions with no GM instruction about them...
