We all witnessed the jump from retarded (GPT 2) to not retarded (GPT 3/4) so it seemed like scaling would always give you huge improvements. Turns out that’s not the case. Now when you double your GPU cluster you just go from college graduate to PhD, which is good but not revolutionary.
If the 400,000-GPU mega datacenter OpenAI is building only delivers marginal improvement to their models then companies like Nvidia will shit the bed since their current valuation is based on the assumption that there will be huge demand for every unit they have the capacity to produce for at least the next 4-5 years. |

GPT 4-level is good enough for most companies to use and derive huge benefits from. They’re not going to pay extra to have a PhD-level LLM run their call center or customer service chats. More excited about that use case than taking the jobs of some min wage workers at T-Mobile |
