Date: June 1st, 2018 2:44 PM Author: Razzle-dazzle flickering center foreskin A 27-year-old Thousand Oaks doctor has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in relation to a homicide that took place Memorial Day in a T.O. condominium.
Police say Bryn Spejcher, a clinical audiologist for UCLA Health in Thousand Oaks, stabbed to death 26-year-old Chad O’Melia sometime after 1 a.m. May 28 inside his home at Casa de Oaks, a condo complex on Maegan Place just off Thousand Oaks Boulevard.
O’Melia, who worked for a Camarillo-based accounting firm, was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple stab wounds, police said.
The two had been dating for a short time, a co-worker said. Police have not said anything about a possible motive.
Spejcher was arrested the evening of May 31 but not booked because she is still in the hospital, said Capt. Garo Kuredjian, spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
Spejcher has been hospitalized since the homicide to receive treatment for self-inflicted stab wounds, police said.
Kuredjian said she was not immediately cooperative with deputies on the scene.
Once she is released from the hospital she will be booked into the pretrial detention facility with bail set at $500,000, police said.
According to her biography on the UCLA Health website, Spejcher received her doctorate of audiology from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and her bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Illinois.
Diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss at age 3, Spejcher is a hearing aid user, an online autobiography says. She is a member of the American Academy of Audiology and the American Speech Language-Hearing Association, and her specialties include adult and pediatric diagnostics, auditory brainstem response testing, hearing aids and cochlear implants.
Spejcher has no prior criminal history the sheriff’s department is aware of, Kuredjian said.

According to Sean O’Melia, the plans are to reduce the charge to involuntary manslaughter, which is causing someone’s death through reckless behavior or in the commission of another crime but without intent to kill.
Murder carries a punishment of up to life in prison. The base sentence for involuntary manslaughter under federal sentencing guidelines is 10 to 16 months in prison.
O’Melia’s not accepting the decision without a fight.
“A month before we go to trial, they tell me, after five and a half years, they’re going to lower charges,” O’Melia said. “The family basically believes Chad is not getting justice.”

Sean O’Melia said several representatives of the district attorney’s office were at the Sept. 14 meeting where he was informed that the office would be seeking lesser charges. Included among the attendees, he said, were Lisa Lyytikainen, chief assistant district attorney; Paul Nuñez, chief deputy district attorney for criminal prosecutions; Tom Dunlevy, major crimes supervising attorney; and Nafziger.
At the meeting, O’Melia said, he was told the prosecutors had an ethical issue with charging murder, another point with which O’Melia takes issue.
“It would appear to any reasonable human that the (ethical) issue is the butchering of an innocent human being and the taking of a human life,” he wrote in a letter dated Sept. 21 addressed to multiple state and local elected officials, including county supervisors, under which the D.A.’s office operates.

The first evidence introduced by the prosecution included police body-camera footage that showed Spejcher kneeling over O'Melia's body and stabbing herself in the neck with an 8-inch serrated knife, even as an officer used his stun gun on her repeatedly. She dropped the knife only after another officer struck her nine times with his retractable steel baton.
