Not just prestige, but also factoring in duration, cost, etc.
3 years at Northwestern seems pretty appealing.
Thoughts?

my god, what a waste of money and time to get a joint degree -- particularly in two fields that view each other with suspicion.
pick a degree program -- either law or business -- and run with it.

Yea, but how much of this is just due to self-selection/correlation. People with the backgrounds to get into a good MBA program (prior WE, for those that apply during 1L year- great grades, etc) would have probably been attractive candidates for those firms anyway.
I had planned to apply to the MBA program at my LS during my 1L but realized its pretty much a complete waste of time and money. Unless you're wealthy enough that it doesn't matter, you're giving up a year of income and getting another 60-70k in debt. You can always cross-register MBA classes, take a business heavy LS course load and end up learning anything you would in the MBA (and with similar networking benefits since you'll have taken a couple of classes there too).
Aside from the prestige, I don't think theres a huge tangible gain from doing the joint degree. However, if you're independently wealthy or getting sponsored for your degree then by all means go ahead and take the extra year of partying, for everyone else I don't think its worth it.

Agree with self-selection theory.
I think it's fundamentally a prestige / branding exercise. Everyone who's worked in the real world for more than 2 years knows that you use <10% of what they teach you at law / business school.

Fair point.
" You can always cross-register MBA classes, take a business heavy LS course load and end up learning anything you would in the MBA"
Yep, this is what I did. But you know that degrees are all about signaling rather than knowledge.
"Aside from the prestige, I don't think theres a huge tangible gain from doing the joint degree."
Come on. Prestige gets you jobs in law.

Date: August 18th, 2010 7:19 AM Author: heady cordovan place of business Subject: Definitely Harvard or Stanford
Harvard and Stanford are far and away the two best (and most prestigious) JD/MBA programs. Good luck getting into either one, but they're clearly the two best. And in the grand scheme of things, one extra year (H & S JD/MBA programs each require 4 years, while a # of other joint programs have recently moved to 3 years) for either Stanford or Harvard is nothing compared to the bank you would make coming out with a JD/MBA from either Stanford or Harvard.
There's a reason Harvard and Stanford both recently said "no way" to reducing their JD/MBA programs to 3 years. And it's not due to cash. There aren't that many students accepted to both their Law and Business Schools (very, very few; so the income generated from these students via tuition is next-to-nothing in their overall budgets). No, it's because Stanford and Harvard both said that they could not justify cutting out 40% of the curriculum (with a 3-year program) and still awarding both a JD and MBA. They're not willing to degrade the value of their JD or their MBA.
So, it's Stanford or Harvard for the JD/MBA in a hearbeat--if you win the admissions lottery. Really, really tough to get into either. But if you do, you will definitely profit.
